Fenton Art Glass

An American Classic and tradition since 1905

A true American success story, Fenton Art Glass traces it's history back to an abandoned glass factory in Martin's Ferry, OH in 1905. It was there that brothers Frank L. and Robert W. Fenton first began their business venture of hand decorating glass blanks from other glass manufacturers.

They soon discovered, however, that they had difficulty finding glasswares of the quality and colors that they desired. This led to them developing their own factory in Williamstown, West Virginia where they manufactured their first pieces of glassware on January 02, 1907.

From these humble beginnings, an American Classic was born and continues to this day.

In the early decades, Frank L. Fenton had a creative drive to develop new and unusual colors of art glass. Strongly influenced by the artists of Stueben and Tiffany, this desire propelled and kept Fenton at the forefront of the American Art Glass industry.

Indeed, Fenton's development in 1907 of iridescent glass led to one of the most enduring glass collecting traditions of modern times, that of Carnival Glass.

During the lean times of the Great Depression and World War II, Fenton produced many practical lines of household wares, but never lost sight of their commitment to producing new colors and artistic lines of art glass.

A lifelong family owned business, the second generation took the reigns in the late 1940's and during an era that saw the closure of American Glass factories at an ever increasing rate, they took the business to new levels and saw steady growth for the next 30 years.

Now under the leadership of the third generation of the Fenton family, the glass company had released news of plans to close in 2007. Late that year another press release came out that stated due to increased buying and internal restructuring, the company would continue operations.

Throughout the years the innovative thinking and designs of Fenton have brought the American public beautiful pieces of art glass in a dizzying array of colors and designs.

From vases to baskets, bird figurines to glass slippers, epergenes to pitcher and glass sets, the tradition shimmers and glows in a wide array of jewel toned glass that is exquisitily painted and decorated.

Some of the most popular and enduring lines have been the silver crest and hobnail patterns, first produced in the mid 20th century.

Whether you collect vintage and antique pieces or new, artist signed and decorated lines, you can find something in Fenton to appeal to just about anyone's taste.

Over 100 years after it's humble beginnings, Fenton remains the largest and foremost producer of art glass in the USA.
