Everyone can help...

When it comes to animal rescue organizations, ferret shelters are not something that comes to the average person's mind.  But in the ferret community, ferret shelters perform a big service.

There are more than 175 shelters in the US that dedicate themselves to helping homeless ferrets.  They work hard to take care of ferrets that people decide they don't have any time for, can't afford to care for, ferrets that are sick and require ongoing treatment, etc.  Ferrets shelter operators also work hard to be sure the ferrets they have taken in are adopted into a permanent home, one that is prepared for the responsibility owning a ferret brings.

Sadly, more and more ferrets are given up every year putting more work on shelters.  Many in the last year have had to stop taking in ferrets due to the number of ferrets they already have, other shelters have had to close due to financial difficulties.  If everyone can just find one way to help, maybe we can make a difference.

The Ferret Giving Tree

Ferret Giving Tree

The Ferret Giving Tree is an annual event that helps to provide some new items for ferrets in shelters. A new hammock, maybe some N-Bones or a gift card to help buy some wood pellets. They don't ask for much, but you can make a little difference to a homeless ferret this holiday season by visiting the Ferret Giving Tree and choosing a ferret off the tree.

A way for you to help.

It would be nice if we were rich and could just give every ferret shelter the money they need to continue what they do. Unfortunately, most of us aren't, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way for you to help. Below are some suggestions on ways to help.
  1. Adopt - Ferret shelters are overrun with ferrets that people have given up for a variety of reasons. Many people think that if they don't get a young ferret it won't bond with them or an older ferret will have behavioral problems, but that is just not the case. Ferret shelters will work to be sure that you are matched up to the right ferret."
  2. Volunteer -shelters can always use extra help with cleaning cages, trimming nails, and washing bedding, but there are other ways to help. Maybe they need help keeping their Petfinder site updated with adoptable ferrets or maybe they need someone to transport a ferret to the shelter. Check with a shelter close to you to see where help is needed.
  3. Foster -many shelters use a foster network to help care for the ferrets or to help with the overflow.
  4. Educate - One reason ferrets are given up is that people have not done enough research into their needs and requirements. Talk to people about what is involved in their care; donate a book or magazine on ferrets to your local library; put together a brochure to pass out on their care. Many pet stores will allow groups to have a set-up a table to talk to people. See if the ferret shelter near you does this and ask if they need help.
  5. Join SOS's Buck-A-Month Club - Support Our Shelters has a program where people can donate a dollar every month. Sure $1 may not sound like much, but when you add your $1 to the dollars 50 or 100 other people give, it can make a difference. Go to Support Our Shelters Buck-A-Month Club for information on how to join.
  6. Memorialize Your Ferret -you can remember that special ferret by sending a donation to SOS. You can find information on at Support Our Shelters Memorial Page.
  7. Use Your Talents - Do you like to sew? Maybe there is a shelter near you who could use some bedding for their ferrets or to sell to new adopters. Do you know how to build websites? Offer to help a shelter put up or maintain their website. Everyone has talents and skills that can be helpful. See what areas your local ferret shelters is looking for help in.
  8. Shop Online - You can help ferret shelters by shopping through affiliate links and sites. For every sale made by someone clicking through a link or site, the shelter gets a percent. You can find affiliate links on many shelter websites or visit iGive. When you sign up you can choose an organization to support. See if the shelter you would like to support participates or do a search for "ferret" to find shelters already participating.
  9. Turn Trash To Treasure -empty ink jet cartridges, laser ink cartridges and cell phones can be turned in for cash. See if a shelter near you participates in these types of programs. If you have items you plan to get rid of, see if a shelter would be interested in the item to sell on Ebay.
  10. Search - help shelters when you do a search online. Visit GoodSearch. You can do a search for ferret shelters in the "Who Do You GoodSearch For?" box and then that shelter will receive 1 cent for every search (they do monitor for fraudulent searches and will remove an organization as a result).
  11. Make a Squidoo Lens - Click the "Make A Lens Like This" button to make a lens about any subject you like! Choose Ferrets Unlimited and they will receive any royalties the Lens generates. It doesn't cost a thing and it is so EASY!
