What Are Cloth Dolls?

Cloth Dolls are taking the world by storm! If you haven't seen what people are doing with a needle and thread and some fabric and stuffing you are in for a real treat!

This lens is about Fiber Art Dolls.

I have been making and designing Fiber Art Dolls for over 10 years now.

I am not talking about Rag dolls, those floppy babyish dolls.

Fiber Art Dolls are made using many exciting techniques including articulated (wired) fingers which can be posed and moved around, they usually have a full body armature( wire inside the doll) which helps them to be posed in certain ways and means the head and body parts can be moved around.

They really are NOT dolls for children!

This truly is an Art Form and can take a while to learn. Some of the dolls are more time consuming than others, mine can take from a week up to a few weeks to finish fully. I use many other media in my dolls including beading, paper art and painting.

I hope you enjoy this lens and get some good information out of it

Art Doll Adventures: Exploring Projects and Processes through Cultural Traditions

I truly love this book. I make cloth art dolls, and like unusual dolls made from interesting shapes that can be tailored to my own designs. The patterns in the book are fun as is - and certainly can be adjusted and reworked endlessly.

I like the ideas for embellishments and design - the photos are well worth looking at and spurred much creative thinking and planning. The author is obviously a fun, spontaneous person who gives lots of permission to play and go your own way - while providing ideas and directions at the same time.

I have recommended this book to everyone I know who likes and makes cloth art dolls. Everyone I've shown it to has wanted a copy for herself.

I would caution those who like more traditional, Raggedy Ann dolls or baby dolls, that they may not find this to their taste. However, if you are interested in pushing your limits and opening up to new and unique ideas, you will certainly have fun with the book.

Art Dolls

Art dolls are not meant to be played with unlike most toy dolls. They are meant to be positioned and displayed as a work of art, rather than used by a child.

See, most of them have a wire armature inside them so that it is easy to pose the doll.

They represent a direction dolls are going: a sophisticated and ever-changing expression of the human form.

They seem to boast an endless variety of colors and patterns, some more complicated than others.

The Artists who make these dolls are becoming more and more skilled and they cam take up to 5 months to complete.

India, My Fiber Art Doll Design

This is India, one of the dolls I have designed.

She is meditating and is holding a crystal in her hand.

I wanted India to be a sort of "new Age" doll so she has a pierced belly button and a nose piercing as well.

India is a fun doll to make, she has articulated fingers and an armature and is posed in a sitting position so she is a bit different.

Fiber Art Dolls

Although these dolls are made mainly with fabric, any media can be used and many of them have paper incorporated into them.

They can also have beads and paint and threads and fibers and even three dimensional objects to embellish them

EAch designer and Artist has her or his own methods and favorite techniques and style.

Thats why you can usually tell who the designer is, as they have their own unique style.

The dolls shown in this fantastic book are unsurpassed works of art. It is impossible to believe that this artist can achieve such fabulous creations in fabric. The figures are so realistic, one would swear that they were living people. Lisa Lichtenfels is the master of her craft. Her creations are true art on a par with any of the great masters' works. This is a book that you will look at again and again, and marvel at the exquisite works of art she has created. My only regret is that I will never be able to own one of her creations.

The Art Doll Chronicles: A Collaborative Journey of Discovery

Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 05/26/2012)Buy Now

This lavishly illustrated, full-color book starts out with the creation of nine art dolls and their makers. Every detail of the beautiful dolls is shown up close with general commentary on how they were put together.

The completed dolls were then sent on a 19-month journey from artist to artist and their travels were recorded in art journals that are also splendidly displayed in the pages of the book. The amount of creativity within both the dolls and the journals is staggering - I can't even put the proper words to it. This is one art book you will never regret buying.
