Handmade Fiber Arts on Etsy, Mine..... and Others!

This lens has brief descriptions of the many forms of Fiber Art, plus it will showcase the works of many of the creative and talented fiber artists you'll find on Etsy, whose work I greatly admire.

The items featured here are all handmade with a great deal of care and much love, as most of us began by making these things for our own children, family and friends long before we began sharing them online for sale.

This is a Scroll-Down Page. Scroll down until you can scroll no more. If you follow a link anywhere on this lens, please come back and read the rest.

My Etsy Journey

Opening Day, March 3, 2008

I began my online selling journey 18 months ago when a friend told me about Etsy. Prior to that time, I had spent 30+ years creating my crafts for the delight of my own children, for gifts for family and friends, and eventually for my grandchildren. Over the years, I had occasionally participated in local craft fairs and displayed my items in consignment shops, selling a few here and there.

Today I continue to have a few items on consignment in a local shop that features handmade items, and I'm currently getting my items ready for a local Christmas Market, but my main focus for my creations has become my Etsy Shop, Mountainside Crochet. I chose my shop name from the fact that at the time I was living on the side of Stumphouse Mountain in Upstate South Carolina, on the edge of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

CROCHET

Crochet is a process of creating fabric from yarn or thread using a crochet hook. The word is derived from the Middle French word croc or croche, meaning hook. Crocheting, similar to knitting, consists of pulling loops of yarn through other loops. Crochet differs from knitting in that only one loop is active at one time (the sole exception being Tunisian crochet), and that a crochet hook is used instead of knitting needles.

Crochet - My Fiber Arts Focus

My favorite fiber art medium is Crochet. Crochet takes many forms, from delicate doilies to bulky sweaters, from pretty afghans to hats to kitchen and household accessories.

My specialty is creating plush animals and toys with children in mind. I love the smile on a child's face when they see or hold one of my 'cute critters'.

My very first listing in my new Etsy Shop last year was a Baby Teddy Bear wearing a bib, crocheted using a soft pale green yarn. Over the years I've made a couple dozen of these Baby Teddy Bears for baby gifts for friends and for sale.

The latest version in my shop today is done in a bright yellow and I've named him "Sunny Yellow Baby Bear".

Tommy the Teddy Bear

Another Teddy from Mountainside Crochet...

Tommy the Teddy BearFull of fun and cuddly as can be is Tommy the Teddy Bear. Tommy loves the ocean and the beach and everything blue like he is.

Tommy the Teddy is hand-crocheted with an ombre acrylic yarn called Ocean that changes colors from light blue to medium blue to lavender, just like the colors of the Sea.

Tommy measures 13 inches tall and about 8 inches across his outstretched arms. He's softly stuffed with polyfil and is wearing a lavender ribbon, which is removable.

Fiber Arts Creations for Christmas

Happy Holiday Humpty Dumpty

Holiday Humpty Dumpty

Humpty Dumpty is Happy because he knows he won't break if he falls off the wall as he's a soft plushie! He's also happy because he loves the Holidays!

Humpty is hand-crocheted in washable acrylic yarn in green, red and white. He's plumply stuffed with soft fiberfil. He has big green yarn eyes and a red yarn nose and smiling mouth. His pointy hat is removable.

Holiday Humpty measures 14 inches from his pointy egg-head to the tips of his black boots, not counting the hat, which is 3 inches long. He also measures 14 inches across his outstretched arms. Humpty 'sits' about 9 inches tall.

Laura's Lovely Letters

A Fellow Crocheter

I've 'known' Laura for nearly a year -- we've never met, but I feel as if I know her through our chats in the forums and belonging to the same 'group' (called Street Teams on Etsy). I felt a special 'bond' with Laura because she and I both crochet "left-handed" - thus her shop name, Laura's Left Hook - and because we both like to create 'sports-related' items.

In addition to many other wonderfully crocheted items, Laura has a very unique and original set of items - LETTER PILLOWS. She began with a Capital M and now makes every letter of the alphabet both in Capital Letters and in lower case, including an ampersand! A very talented and creative crochet artist who's terrific shop is here: LaurasLeftHook

KNITTING

Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them.

Different yarns and knitting needles may be used to achieve different end products by giving the final piece a different color, texture, weight, or integrity. Using needles of varying sharpness and thickness as well as different varieties of yarn adds to the effect.

QUILTING

Quilting is another sewing method, done by hand or by sewing machine. The process uses a needle and thread to join typically three layers together: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted.

NEEDLEWORK

Needlework is a broad term for the handicrafts of decorative sewing and textile arts. Anything that uses a needle for construction can be called needlework.

Needlework in it's Many Forms

EMBROIDERY: Embroidery is the art or handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins.

PLASTIC CANVAS: Plastic canvas is a craft material of lightweight plastic with regularly spaced holes in imitation of embroidery canvas. It is also commonly known as vinyl weave. Plastic canvas is typically used as a foundation for needlepoint or other canvas work embroidery, usually in acrylic or wool knitting yarn. Due to its rigidity, it is useful for creating 3-dimensional objects such as tissue box covers, small jewelry boxes, handbags, and other decorative objects.

CROSS STITCH: Cross-stitch is a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches are used to form a picture. Cross-stitch is usually executed on easily countable evenweave fabric. The stitcher counts the threads in each direction so that the stitches are of uniform size and appearance. This form of cross-stitch is also called counted cross-stitch in order to distinguish it from other forms of cross-stitch.

CREWEL EMBROIDERY: Crewel Embroidery, or Crewelwork, is a decorative form of surface embroidery using wool and a variety of different embroidery stitches to follow a design outline applied to the fabric. The technique is at least a thousand years old. It was used in the Bayeux Tapestry, in Jacobean embroidery and in the Quaker tapestry.

APPLIQUE: in the context of sewing, applique refers to a needlework technique in which pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewn onto another piece of fabric to create designs, patterns or pictures.[1] It is particularly suitable for work which is to be seen from a distance, such as in banner-making.
