How to Find the Real Surveys and REALLY Get Paid
A Freelance Consumer Researcher is a person who helps businesses conduct market research by filling out questionnaires, taking part in surveys, testing out new-not-yet-released products, doing quality control audits (mystery shopping) of local businesses, and sitting in of juried focus groups. These people get paid to voice their opinions and write reviews. Some go on to set up their own businesses such as becoming a local food critic who writes for newspaper columns.
While getting started is easy, it takes a lot of hard work, perservirance, common sense, and strong willed head strong persistence to make successful a full time career of it. Sitting at the computer all day taking online surveys is not the way to make a full time career of this, though it is a good way to get started and get some practice before moving on to the bigger stuff. In the long run, it's are hard job to make a full time career of, but if you set your mind to it and are willing to put in a lot of research and hard labor, it can be done.
One of the biggest scams out there is the boasting words: "Get Paid to Take Surveys". Once upon a time, you could take a survey and get handed a check to pay for your time. A real check, not reward points, not an entry into a sweepstakes, not a promise that if your is one of the first 10 surveys received you'll win a Wii, not a few pennies that you have to save up to until you reach a pay out level, but an actual check rarely less than $25 and more often $100 - $200 per survey.
For those of us who have been taking surveys long enough, we know the difference between the real surveys that pay you and the fake surveys that scam you. Unfortunately, if you did not join the band wagon in the early to mid 1990's than, you have no idea what these real surveys look like or how to go about finding them. Searching Google is no help, either when it's first 10 or so pages consist of the scammers (you usually have to head to the lower search results on Google to find the real surveys).
The problem with the idea of paid surveys, is that the scammers do not tell you the whole truth. They are too busy dazzling you with promises of $1,000 a day to take the time to tell you that the researchers who ARE making $1,000 a day, are rare, few, and far between, and that these people put in a lot of foot work and gas mileage, and rarely have time to spend taking the so-called "online surveys". On this lens, I'll be taking a look at some of the ways you can get started as and work your way up to becoming a successful consumer researcher.
Getting Paid to Take Real Surveys While Avoiding the Scams

Before I continue . . .
Paid to Take Survey Questionnaires

What I've Learned

I have noticed a lot of web sites, and in fact many Squidoo lenses even, where the web/lens master has placed tons of affiliate banners saying that if you click the banner and join some club/group/site/team, you'll get paid loads of money for completing the surveys the group sends you. A few of the more common examples include: CashCrate, SnapDollars, Greenfield Online, etc, etc, etc.
As far as I can tell, the folks making money from these sites are NOT the folks taking the surveys, but instead are the folks promoting the affiliate banners telling other folks to take the surveys.
I've been getting paid to do survives since 1997, in my experience the ONLY survives that ACTUALLY pay you (checks ranging from $50 - $200 per survey or with the actual products tested in the survey) are the companies themselves: Hersey's, GMC, Kellog's ect, not some go between scammer site.
I'm a member of all 3 of the sites I just mentioned, as well as dozens more like them, for several years now, one, Greenfield, I joined in 1997, 12 years ago, and have yet to see a penny from any of them, or from any other third party site for that matter.
To date the only ones that have ever actually paid me are the actual companies. Write to the company, tell them you want to test their products and be on their consumer test team. They'll put you on a waiting list, and when they do their next round of product testing, you'll get the product (and/or a check to buy it) in the mail along with a survey to fill out and send in. (Or you may be asked to go to a hotel conference for a face to face survey - which usually pays you for the expense to get there).
In other words, if you want to do surveys for Sony and Nike, you don't need some third party middleman, all you have to do is write to Sony and ask to be put on their list. That's what I did and that's how come I actually get paid for the surveys I take.
As a result of taking these consumer test surveys, I have eaten candy and cereals as much as 2 years before they hit the store shelves (thanks to Hersey's and Kellogg's), I've used shampoos and beauty products that no one knew existed a year or two before the public knew about them. I've gone to conferences at hotels and had a free meal while we discussed what we did and did not like about the meal and what things we would and would not buy and how much we would pay for them - and on top of the free meal, the good company, and the exspences paid, we each received a $75 check just for showing up. GMC pays in scratch off lottery tickets and Walmart Gift cards for trying out new cars, only I don't have a drivers license, so I couldn't test drive the cars, but they paid me any ways just for showing up and telling them what I thought about the new models (I did not like the new models and told them so - they were very glad to get my bad review! LOL!) I was eating Wonka Runts and Rinky Dinks 4 years before they were released to the public.
Also, many local businesses will advertise in the Sunday classifies looking for testers, that's how I found the GMC ones.
Don't bother with the online third party sites - get out there and start contacting the companies directly. You won't make a full time income doing it, but you'll certainly have fun, meet new people, get to try out a lot of great products, and get a small extra check every once in a while.
There is a new site, Treasure Trooper, which has only been around since 2008, they claim to have actually paid members over $1million dollars since they started up. Since it's free to join, I figured I'd try them out and give them a chance to prove that they are NOT like the other sites. As of yet, it's too soon for me to say wither they make good on their promises or not. I'll let you know one way or the other, after I've had a chance to test them out. And if you want to try testing them out to, here's the link to their site. If you do try them out, let me know how it goes, because I'm always on the look out for money makers that actually make money.

Beware of Scams

Warning! SCAM ALERT!!!!!
What to look for and how to spot a scam.

When looking for surveys to take, keep these things in mind:
DO NOT PAY MONEY . . . no legitimate survey group will EVER ask you to pay to take their survey. Real legitimate surveys are part of a marketing champaign headed by a real live business. Marketing campaigns allow spending allowances - this means that the company has to use it's marketing fees to find panelists like you and PAY them to take the survey. If they ask you to pay money to take their survey, than they are NOT a legitimate business and ARE NOT using a legal marketing champaign to fund their consumer survey. Steer clear of these frauds. NEVER pay money to take a survey.
DO NOT JOIN A GROUP THAT REQUIRES PAYMENT TO JOIN . . . There are a lot of groups out there that claim to be compiling surveys for you to take. Many of them will ask you to pay a membership fee before they will allow you to see their list. These groups ARE NOT the businesses running the marketing campaigns, and therefor ARE NOT the ones doing the surveys. All they are doing is looking around for current surveys and gathering up a list of them. In other words, they spent a lot of time searching on Google, to find FREE information, that you could have just as easily searched for and found on your own. In fact, there is nothing stopping you from compiling your own list!
Now, I'm not saying don't join the groups that compile lists. I'm saying don't join the groups that ask you to PAY to join their group or ask you to PAY to read their list. This is one of the biggest scams out there, because every drop of information on these lists is so easy to find if you just take the time to search on Google, and thus, rather than make money taking surveys, these folks decided to make money by charging you to read their Google search results! It's so easy to do, that every one can do it, and that is why there are so many of these sites out there.
Here's something to think about: if it's so easy to do, so easy for them to compile these lists, than why not, by pass them all together and start compiling a list of your own? That's what I did, and that's what these links on this Squidoo lens are: 100% FREE sites. I'm sure I missed some of the sites out there, so don't just check out my list either, head to Google and start looking to compile your own list - it'll be your best ally when it comes to looking for new surveys to take.
NEVER SUBMIT ANY SURVEY WHICH ASKED YOU TO ENTER YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION!!!!! . . . How many times have you spent 30 minutes filling out a survey, only to get to the last page and be told you must either:
a.) complete 2 of the following offers to continue
or
b.) please include your credit card information to submit your survey
or
c.) please submit your cell phone number to submit your answers
Yep, we've all seen them. These are NOT REAL or LEGITIMATE surveys!!!! These are database collectors. All they are looking for is your personal information so that they can put you on a mailing list. NONE of you survey answers are ever looked at, read, or acknowledged.
Will the minor offenders will only fill up you inbox with spam, the worst offenders will charge things like $700 airline tickets from Nigeria or $12,000 Rolex watches to your credit card. This happened to me, only I don't even have a credit card! A few years ago a hacker, used my email account info, to hack into my email, than from there hack into my eBay account, and than proceeded to purchase cellphones, computers, and Rolex watches at alarming speeds. eBay shut down my account after a dozen or so cell phones, more than 30 computers, and thankfully only one diamond encrusted Rolex. They than notified me that they thought my account had been hacked since I'd never spent more than $50 in one month and now I was spending tens of thousand in a few hours. It took me 6 months to fix the mess. And it was traced back to, yep, you guessed it, one of those surveys that ended by asking you to "complete 2 promotions".
So, learn from me and don't ever, ever, EVER hit the submit button on ANY survey that ends by asking for credit cards, cell phone numbers, or completing a promotional offer!
I had a friend who a few years back took a survey over the phone, a survey which ended by asking for his credit card information. A few weeks later, he received his credit card bill and found purchases of several airline tickets, and he hadn't been on a plane in years.
A few months ago a relative did an online survey which required her to submit her cell phone number in order to complete the survey. With in hours she had .90c charges being made on her cell phone at a rate of every 15 minutes - it added us to an astronomical phone bill in a matter of hours.
Know the scams. Know what to look for. And run like hell when you see them.
Paid Surveys According to Wikipedia:
A paid or incentivized survey is a type of statistical survey where the participant is rewarded through an incentive program, generally entry into a sweepstakes program or a small cash reward, for completing one or more surveys.
A paid survey is used to collect quantitative information about the participants' personal and economic habits set against their particular demographic. Incentivized surveys are considered to be more likely to catch a wider and more representative range of respondents compared to unincentivised surveys. YouGov in the United Kingdom say
Legitimate surveys are usually unpaid (as with Gallup poll) or incentivized (as with YouGov); surveys where the respondent must pay or purchase products to join a panel are generally scams, as are sites that disappear before paying the participants. Legitimate surveys do not need credit card information from respondents.
In the last few years most U.S. market research companies have developed online panels to recruit participants and gather information. With the power of the internet thousands of respondents can be contacted instantly rather than the weeks and months it used to take to conduct interviews through telecommunication and/or mail. By conducting research online, a research company can reach out to demographics they may not have had access to when using other methods.
When a research company needs respondents from a demographic they cannot reach they can easily reach out to a worldwide or specialty panel. By offering a cash incentive to respondents in return for feedback these companies are able to quickly fill quotas and collect the information being sought by the client.
100% Free Surveys
(or where it is that I found them, so you can do what I do)
NOTE: Getting paid for online questioner, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank surveys is not easy. Most pay from .01c to $2 per survey or via rewards points which you turn in for prizes. For these types, you have to save up to reach their payout levels. Some have payout levels as low as $5 while others are as high as $100. Some roll over your points from one month to the next, while others start you over at zero points each month. ALWAYS READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE TO FIND OUT HOW EACH SITE WILL PAY YOU!!!!
Also: Some sites only enter you into sweepstakes. Some pay you in free products, samples, or coupons. Very rarely and only once in a great while will you run across an online survey that will pay between $10 to $75 to take it, but usually you have to take a qualifier test first and usually they shut down the survey after 10 or 12 people have taken it.
In any case, the ones I've listed here are the ones I've tried out and so far none of these has ever asked me to pay them anything or enter and credit card info or complete an offer to take the survey. These are all 100% free surveys. In any case each one does not pay much so you have to take quite a few of them before your income starts to add up substantually, so don't think of this as a full time career!

Consumer Research Panels and Focus Groups

Research Panels and Focus Groups

I think my favorite form of getting paid to take surveys (as well as the easiest, most fun, and highest paid form) is Consumer Panelists also known as Focus Groups. A Focus Group is most often a group of 12 strangers who are asked to meet at a local hotel (like Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, etc), where they have dinner with some interviewers from (a usually unnamed) local business. Often they will be informed that the group is being video taped and or recorded.
The meetings are very interactive, so you can't just sit there and do nothing. You must enjoy talking to complete strangers, and be willing to get detailed information about your thoughts and opinions about products, as well as tell about life experiences that might influence the companies decisions in making new products. Most meetings will start out with the interviewing asking questions about your personal lifestyle, job, health, ect, so that the company can get a better idea of who their customers are.
Usually the interviewer will have a product (often unmarked without company labels) or a selection of products for you to sample, test, try, etc, and than the group discusses what they did or did not like about the product(s), wither or not they would buy them, wither or not they were able to recognizes them (if they had bought them before), how much they wold expect to pay for them, where they would expect to buy them, what changes they would make to make the product better, etc. The groups usually consist of the team verbally answering questions asked by the interviewer. Usually there will be multiple choice question forms for you to fill out before leaving.
Focus groups are the highest paid form of taking surveys. In most cases, the group meeting lasts 2 to 6 hours and pay from $50 per meeting up to $200 per hour. If you can do enough of them, it is possible to make a full time income doing nothing else. Unfortunately, the waiting lists for these groups is huge, and it is also possible to go weeks, months, or even years before your name gets selected to join the next round of groups.
Focus Groups According to Wikipedia:
Types of focus groups
Variants of focus groups include:
Two-way focus group - one focus group watches another focus group and discusses the observed interactions and conclusion
Dual moderator focus group - one moderator ensures the session progresses smoothly, while another ensures that all the topics are covered
Dueling moderator focus group - two moderators deliberately take opposite sides on the issue under discussion
Respondent moderator focus group - one or more of the respondents are asked to act as the moderator temporarily
Client participant focus groups - one or more client representatives participate in the discussion, either covertly or overtly
Mini focus groups - groups are composed of four or five members rather than 8 to 12
Teleconference focus groups - telephone network is used
Online focus groups - computers connected via the internet are used
Traditional focus groups can provide accurate information, and are less expensive than other forms of traditional marketing research. There can be significant costs however : if a product is to be marketed on a nationwide basis, it would be critical to gather respondents from various locales throughout the country since attitudes about a new product may vary due to geographical considerations. This would require a considerable expenditure in travel and lodging expenses. Additionally, the site of a traditional focus group may or may not be in a locale convenient to a specific client, so client representatives may have to incur travel and lodging expenses as well.
The use of focus groups has steadily evolved over time and is becoming increasingly widespread.
A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked about their attitude towards a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea, or packaging. Questions are asked in an interactive group setting where participants are free to talk with other group members.
The first focus groups were created at the Bureau of Applied Social Research by associate director, sociologist Robert K. Merton. The term itself was coined by psychologist and marketing expert Ernest Dichter.

(or where it is that I found them, so you can do what I do)

Quality Control Surveys and Mystery Shopping

Mystery Shopping Poll
Quality Control Surveys aka Mystery Shopping

Mystery Shopping is a very misunderstood job. If you were to believe the scam sites you would assume that you get paid cash for doing your regular shopping. This is not true. Mystery Shopping is a form of getting paid for taking surveys. When you become a Mystery Shopper, you do not do you regular shopping. Instead you are given an assignment. While each assignment varies, they usually consist of a survey form which tells you specifically which store to go to, what time to go there, which items to shop form, and includes a list of activities for you to perform, such as deliberately looking for items that were one sale last week and starting an argument with the clerk over the price. You must take note of the clerks name, the clerks actions and response, and wither or not they lost their temper or kept right on smiling. You will be asked to use the bathroom, to poke around behind shelves looking for dust-bunnies and spiders, and to make note of over all cleanliness and friendliness throughout the store.
In other words you are exactly what your job title says you are: a Quality Control Specialist masquerading as a regular customer. Thus the name Mystery Shopper. You look like a shopper, but in fact you are an under cover detective checking up on the workers.
How are your writing skills? When you finish you assignment, you'll have to fill out forms, take multiple choice surveys, and write up a report on the over all quality of your shopping experience. Ability to write essays is a MUST.
This is a labor intensive job, requiring you to be on your feet many hours at a time (no 5 minute running in for a gallon of milk here - each assignment will take you an average of 2 to 6 hours!) and may often be required to lift heavy items weighing 50lbs or more. To be a Mystery Shopper you need to be in good physical health.
Travel is another thing to consider: rarely will you be sent to a local store you regularly shop at. It is not unusual to be sent to a store across the state, out of state, or even a few states away.
And contrary to popular belief, Mystery Shopping isn't all about buying designer dresses and eating at 5 star restaurants. More often than not, you'll be sent to gas stations, auto repair shops, grocery stores, super markets, pet stores, big box marts, nursing homes, doctor's offices, dentists, and other "less exciting" not so glamorous places.
However, once you get the scammer stories of glizt and dazzle out of your system and know what to expect, Quality Control Surveys aka Mystery Shopping, is in fact the most profitable was to make money by taking surveys - if you do it full time working several hours a day 4 or 5 days a week, that is.
Mystery Shopping According to Wikipedia:
Mystery shopping or mystery consumer is a tool used by market research companies to measure quality of retail service or gather specific information about products and services . Mystery shoppers posing as normal customers perform specific tasks?such as purchasing a product, asking questions, registering complaints or behaving in a certain way ? and then provide detailed reports or feedback about their experiences.
Mystery shopping was standard practice by the early 1940sfootnote on History of Mystery Shopping as a way to measure employee integrity. Tools used for mystery shopping assessments range from simple questionnaires to complete audio and video recordings. Many mystery shopping companies are completely administered through the Internet, allowing potential mystery shoppers to use the Internet to register for participation, find mystery shopping jobs and receive payment.
The most common venues where mystery shopping is used are retail stores, movie theaters, restaurants, fast food chains, banks, gas stations, car dealerships, apartments and health clubs, as well as health care facilities. In the UK, mystery shopping is increasingly used to provide feedback on customer services provided by local authorities and other non-profit organizations, such as housing associations and churches.Mystery worshipers test church
Where to Find Mystery Shopping Jobs:
(or where it is that I found them, so you can do what I do)
The internet is filled with sites telling you that if you pay a ton of money, they will give you a list of places needing mystery shoppers. THIS IS A LIE!!!!!! DO NOT PAY THEM ANY MONEY!!!! There is no need for you to pay them to find mystery shopping jobs.
All you have to do is find a company that hires mystery shoppers, and FILL OUT A JOB APPLICATION just like you would do for any other type of job. Know that when it comes to mystery shopping, that if you DID NOT fill out a job application (often also requiring you to send in a resume as well) than you did not "apply" to get the job.
This list here, are the places which handle hiring mystery shoppers for businesses. These are 100% real business, they are employers looking for employees, and in most cases you'll need to have at least a few years experience in retail sales and or merchandising. Some require certification and a few require a bachelor's degree or higher.
Know that these ARE NOT some simple online sites that are going to give you an assignment here or there, but rather you are applying for a full time job - in most cases YOU WILL want to quit your day job once you get established as a full time shopper because it will take up a lot of hours each day. Know this BEFORE you consider applying for these jobs!

What do you think of quality control audits (mystery shopping)?
Have you tried doing quality control audits of local businesses (mystery shopping for pay)? Why or why not? How long have you been doing it? How much do you make a month? A year? What worked for you? Which sites paid you the most? Which sites paid you the least? Which sites are out right scams that should be avoided? What do you really like about mystery shopping surveys? What do you really hate? What have you learned and what advice have you to offer those just getting started? Speak out now! Let your voice be heard! (and you don't have to be a member of Squidoo to comment here either!!!)

Critics and Writing Reviews

The Least Hyped Up Type of Survey Career: Critics and Reviewers

....info being written....
Writing Reviews According to Wikipedia:
: See also critic.
A review is an evaluation of a publication, such as a movie, video game, musical composition, book, or a piece of hardware like a car, home appliance, or computer. In addition to a critical statement, the review's author may assign the work a rating to indicate its relative merit. More loosely, an author may review current events or items in the news.
A compilation of reviews may itself be called a review. The New York Review of Books, for instance, is a collection of essays on literature, culture, and current affairs. National Review, founded by William F. Buckley, Jr., is an influential conservative magazine, and Monthly Review is a long-running socialist periodical.
In scientific literature the literature review is a category of scientific paper, which provides a synthesis of research on a topic at that moment in time. A compilation of these reviews forms the core content of a 'tertiary' scientific journal, with examples including Annual Reviews, the Nature Reviews series of journals and Trends.
A peer review is the process by which scientists assess the work of their colleagues that has been submitted for publication in the scientific literature. A software review is also a form of peer review, by the co-workers.
A consumer review refers to a review written by the owner of a product or the user of a service who has sufficient experience to comment on reliability and whether or not the product or service delivers on its promises.
An expert review usually refers to a review written by someone who has tested several peer products or services to identify which offers the best value for money or the best set of features.
A bought review is the system where the creator (usually a company) of a new product pays a reviewer to review his new product. Primarily used in the car, movie and game industry this system creates a kind of undercover advertising. Bought reviews obviously are often biased, although exceptions occur.
Nielsen (2009) proposes a framework for scholarly or academic reviews of dictionaries, but this framework may also be extended to other types of reviews. In particular, the requirement that reviews must provide useful information to the intended audience and the requirements to the informative value of reviews.

About the Author
Cameron Johnson had started, run, and sold twelve successful companies by the time he was twenty-one. His business successes have been featured in "Time, Newsweek, BusinessWeek, USA Today, " and many more publications, as well as on the Today show and Good Morning America. When he was fifteen he became an advisory board member of a Tokyo-based company, and his autobiography, "15-Year-Old CEO, " published in Japanese, became an instant bestseller. He has consulted to Fortune 500 companies and spoken at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Every one of his businesses has been a success, even in the worst days of the Internet bust. As a college freshman, he started CertificateSwap.com, an online marketplace for gift cards, which was a runaway success and for which he was offered $10 million in venture capital. He lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Working from Home According to Wikipedia:
Telecommuting, e-commuting, e-work, telework, working from home (WFH), or working at home (WAH) is a work arrangement in which employees enjoy flexibility in working location and hours. In other words, the daily commute to a central place of work is replaced by telecommunication links. Many work from home, while others, occasionally also referred to as nomad workers or web commuters utilize mobile telecommunications technology to work from coffee shops or myriad other locations. Telework is a broader term, referring to substituting telecommunications for any form of work-related travel, thereby eliminating the distance restrictions of telecommuting.Nilles, Jack M., Managing Telework: Options for Managing the Virtual Workforce, John Wiley & Sons 1998, ISBN 0-471-29316-4 All telecommuters are teleworkers but not all teleworkers are telecommuters. A frequently repeated motto is that "work is something you do, not something you travel to".Leonhard, Woody, The Underground Guide to Telecommuting, Addison-Wesley 1995, ISBN 0-201-48343-2 A successful telecommuting program requires a management style which is based on results and not on close scrutiny of individual employees. This is referred to as management by objectives as opposed to management by observation. The terms telecommuting and telework were coined by Jack Nilles in 1973. Nineteen-year-old Gray grew up in the projects in Chicago and formed his first business organization at age 7, inspired by his mother's will and determination. By age 15, he had developed his own food company for kids, Farr-Out Foods, which he sold for $1.5 million. He has lived in Japan, England, New York, and Las Vegas; hosted the celebrity TV show Backstage Live; and is in high demand as a public speaker. It may be hard to believe that sound business advice can come from a teenager, but Farrah Gray is no ordinary kid. Although the book is punctuated with what he calls "Real Points" for success and exercises for things like building a great team and seizing opportunities, the real inspiration is his personal story, which speaks strongly of the importance of mentoring to young people and sends the message that you should never underestimate anyone, especially yourself. Farrah is a young man of true character and integrity, and we surely haven't heard the last of him.
