Employment in this recession

Over the past year and a half the economy has been in the worse shape since the great depression. Massive layoffs and staggering unemployment numbers dominate the news. Unlike other recessions, the end of this misery doesn't seem to be in sight. And finding a job in this economy is a daunting task for the many that are unemployed and the number without jobs seems to grow daily. But don't despair you can find work in this economy.

Assess yourself and your situation

Before you start sending out resumes, take some time to assess yourself and your situation. Questions need to be asked.
  • What do I want to do - what job would you love to do, is it something that you have already done or something that you haven't done?
  • What can I do - What are my skills and my experience?
  • What do I need? - Of course a job, better yet a career but that career needs to pay enough to live on.

Make a plan

Then a resume

  1. Research industries that you have an interest in and industries that you have skills that they need
  2. From number 1, write down the industries that you have skills in and that you may want to work.
  3. While I am unemployed what skills can I learn to make myself more employable?
  4. Network, an overused term but valuable just the same. Contact everyone you know to tell them that you are looking for work
  5. Look for the hidden jobs
  6. Go online to job sites for job listings and career change advice

Avoid job search burnout

  • Take a break, rest for a short period and get your mind off job hunting. When you start back up again you will feel refreshed and ready to go.
  • Start an exercise program if you don't already exercise. Exercise is great for the mind as well as the body.
  • Join a club and interact with other people. This might be a great networking tool.
  • Change your job searching routine. Nothing can cause complacency faster than doing the same boring routine over and over again.
  • Meditation can help relieve stress as well as open your mind to new possibilities.

Having an online presence

In general terms without even considering looking for a job, an online presence is being actively involved in social media such as Facebook, LinkIn, and Twitter among other sites. Having your profile out there on these sites where everyone can see them is invaluable. They know you are looking for a job and they will get to know you by what you have written. Especially linkIn which is geared toward those who are networking for a job.

Having an online presence can also mean that you have a blog or a website where you can continually put yourself out there for folks who are looking for employees. But definitely belong to the social media sites.

Federal jobs

The federal government is always hiring. Although the process of getting a federal job may take a long time, it will be well worth it if you are hired by them. The benefits are good and they don't downsize as much as the private sector (the government always seems to get bigger!)

Find a Job Role Model

Who can be your job role model, anyone from someone you used to work with to a relative and even folks that you haven't met yet. If it is someone that you know give them a call and ask if you can spend a little time talking about their career path and how they got to be where they are at. Hopefully they will also give you advice on your own career search. Of course if you don't know anyone that fits that bill, you might want to set up an information interview at a company and speak to someone who works in a career that you would like to enter. Since you aren't interviewing for a job most folks would gladly take some time out to help others with career advice especially in this economy.

Consider starting your own business

You may think that this is absolutely the worst time to start your own business but if you have a good idea and you are passionate about it then just do it. Starting a business can be as terrifying and as exciting as it gets success isn't guaranteed and failure occurs in the majority of folks that try their hand at entrepreneur.

But why not try?

Jobs aren't plentiful right now and they may not be for quite a while. Going out on your own can be a lot easier if you know what you want to do and you have made a plan. And what can also be a great help to you is that the government encourages small business with loans and help. Make sure to start your entrepreneur journey with a visit to the SBA Small Business Administration website. There is an incredible amount of useful information there.

Thanks for the sweet lens. I've been looking for some physical therapy assistant jobs, and it's tough in this recession. There are so many companies that have put a hold on things because they don't have the resources to hire these days. Hopefully I can find something soon!

You can achieve considerable success in your career. It is possible to overcome what most people call discrimination, accidents of birth, and late blooming as you continue down the path you prefer. But, you will find that it is not something to be done casually. There are no get-rich-quick schemes, no 90-day wonders, and no labor-free approaches to a successful career. If you want success, you have to reach for it. That reaching takes time and effort: a continuous cycle of studying, learning, working, and producing. In this personal enterprise, you will find great joy and solid employment opportunities. The CareerMentor website offers insights from a 35-year industrial career. You are welcome to make use of its free content (http://informationanthology.net/CareerMentor).

This is a really good idea. It would really make job searching very easy. This is especially hard in the recession. Have you thought about maybe partnering with Section 8 Certification? They have handled the electronic filing of HUD Section 8, PRAC 811, PRAC 202 and Rent Supplement projects for landlords nationwide since 1994. Could be a good idea. And more jobs!
