1922 Ford Fire Chief Runabout - 1:32 Scale

In 1922, the Ford Motor Company continued to pass on the money saved by their increasingly efficient production line to their customers. The TT chassis (Ford didnt build trucks yet, just chassis) had its price reduced $100 to $445 and production was at a record high. No wonder fire departments, still converting in many areas from horse-drawn wagons, made Ford the #1 choice for smaller vehicles. This 1922 Fire Chief Runabout features a hand-cranked siren and covered hose bed.

1923 Maxim C-1 Pumper - 1:24 Scale

Carlton Maxim opened his woodworking factory in Middleboro in 1888. The next year the civicminded Maxim joined the Middleboro Fire Department. By 1912 he was Chief Engineer. (later to be named Fire Chief). It was his unhappiness with a Knox HoseCar bought in 1912 that turned Maxim into an apparatus manufacturer. Familiar with vehicles as one of New Englands largest automotive dealerships, representing companies like Overland and Studebaker, Maxims first effort for the Middleboro F.D. used a Thomas Flyer chassis. By 1915 the Maxim Fire Apparatus Company was formed making their own pumpers from scratch.

They were not for every town and city. Costing about $1 per pound (and these 25 foot-long pumpers weighed around 7 tons), they were too expensive for many municipalities. In fact, today almost 25% of the Ahrens-Fox pumpers built before the company finally stopped production in 1952, are still around.

1931 Seagrave Fire Engine - 1:32 Scale

The Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department of Old Greenwich, CT acquired this pumper in July 1931 for $13,000 from the Seagrave Fire Apparatus Co. Unlike the Dept. engines before it, Engine 3 contained a booster tank which for the first time carried water instead of chemicals. It remained in service until 1964, when it was sold to a collector in Clarion, Pa. The engine was reacquired by SBVFD firefighters in 1979 for $5,000, and a six-year refurbishing followed. This finely-crafted replica has captured all the details - right down to the clam shell decorations on the engine hood covers.

1936 REO Speedwagon Fire Engine - 1:50 Scale

In 1936 the Vigilant Hose Company of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania was looking for an inexpensive versatile pumper. REO, which had discontinued its failing car business that year, was the only maker at that time producing smaller dependable pumpers that fit a small town budget. Priced at $3600, it used the Speedwagon chassis and a body by Hale Pump. The 52 horsepower nearly indestructible Gold Crown engine produced 1000 gallons per minute from the Hale Pump. 1938 Ahrens-Fox VC Fire Engine - 1:43 Scale

This 1938 Ahrens-Fox VC Pumper performed admirably from 1938 until 1955 for the town of Boonton, New Jersey. It was the first fire engine in the Town of Boonton to be painted cream. In 1955, the pumper was sold to be used in industrial plant protection. It has since been fully restored, and has won many trophies and awards at parades and musters in N.J. and neighboring states.

The era between World Wars has been called the"Golden Age of Fire Enginesas all the top U.S. automakers competed to produce innovatively designed and functional fire engines. Ford led the way and garnered the largest portion of this business and the totally redesigned 1938 Fire Engine is a great example of why. With its new split grille and, short nose hood, the new design had fire departments all over America fighting each other for production. Ford had provided even more room than ever for hoses, ladders, fire extinguishers and other essential equipment. To this they added unique pivoting lights that could be turned from the front seats. Founded in 1900, Mack Trucks, Inc. has a long history of producing the toughest trucks on the road. Mack is also probably the most famous American manufacturer of fire apparatus. Mack fire engines were made from 1911 until 1990, and many units are still faithfully serving the public today. This incredibly stylish 1938 Mack Type 75 pumper is a perfect blend of sleek lines, heavy-duty construction, and pure power. This workhorse featured a 100 gallon booster tank and 750 gpm triple pumper.

1939 American La France 550-RC Pumper - 1:24 Scale

Throughout the early to mid-twentieth century, through two World Wars, and the urban boom of the 50s and 60s, American LaFrance continued to be at the forefront of fire apparatus design and manufacture. Many of the models produced then are now considered prized collectors items, and have found proud places in museums and private displays everywhere. To this day, American LaFrance has built and put into service more fire apparatus than any other company in the world. This truck is a Type 550-RC that was shipped from the Elmira, NY American LaFrance Factory. The 500 gallon per minute pumper was considered the Rolls Royce of its day.
