No wonder fire departments, still converting in many areas from horse-drawn wagons, made Ford the #1 choice for smaller vehicles. This 1922 Fire Chief Runabout features a hand-cranked siren and covered hose bed.

By 1912 he was Chief Engineer. (later to be named Fire Chief). It was his unhappiness with a Knox HoseCar bought in 1912 that turned Maxim into an apparatus manufacturer. Familiar with vehicles as one of New Englands largest automotive dealerships, representing companies like Overland and Studebaker, Maxims first effort for the Middleboro F.D. used a Thomas Flyer chassis. By 1915 the Maxim Fire Apparatus Company was formed making their own pumpers from scratch.

Unlike the Dept. engines before it, Engine 3 contained a booster tank which for the first time carried water instead of chemicals. It remained in service until 1964, when it was sold to a collector in Clarion, Pa. The engine was reacquired by SBVFD firefighters in 1979 for $5,000, and a six-year refurbishing followed. This finely-crafted replica has captured all the details - right down to the clam shell decorations on the engine hood covers.
