Toy Fire Station

Fire Station Toys are truly universal gifts. It used to be only boys would play with fire trucks and firemen. But now girls play with them too. My little daughter got her first fire truck when she was 6 months old - it looked like a blob of red painted wood - but had wheels and she could drive it around to her heart's content - ok, driving around was limited by her own limited ability to move, but you know what I mean. Since then, she is just as likely to reach for a doll, as for a fire engine or a fire rescue helicopter. Boys of course delight in playing with fire trucks, toy fire stations, and anything that has to do with firefighting.

I think this popularity of fire station toys come partially from the look, partially from the nature of the profession. There is also a strong cultural part. Let me explain. For very young kids, it's the look - solid red colors, blinking lights, sirens - those are all very basic stimuli that kids learn to distinguish very early in life, and so delight in seeing time and time again - after all, it's a small piece of this enormous, alien world that they actually recognize and understand. Most other events are random and infrequent, and differ little from other events, so it's tough to figure it out. A fire engine is something that a kid recognizes and remembers easily.

The Ultimate Fire Station

For kids that are a bit older, the other part of the fascination is the very nature of the profession - firefighters need to be effective in many different environments - so they have lots of tool and gadgets to help them. Just think of a typical fire truck - hoses, ladders, oxygen masks, axes, fire extinguishers - all these are faithfully reproduced in a toy fire station. Toy fire trucks with blinking lights and sirens are of course the most important part of fire station toy equipment - and the coolest too. I mean, who wouldn't want to have a "real" red fire truck with a siren and blinking lights.

As kids become even older, they start to understand language and pick up our cultural fascination and appreciation of the firefighters. Think about it - we have great respect, sometime awe, for people who often risk their lives by running into burning buildings - all to save others. It's a combination of daredevil courage and service to others that builds the firefighter's reputation in the society. When we talk about firefighters, these emotions come through. Kids are very good at picking up emotions in a conversation. As a result, they grow up with this ever-unfolding view of firefighters - from basic stimuli to cool gadgets, to societal respect. Is it any wonder that they want to play at being a fireman or a firewoman?

Fireman Building Set with Fire Station Doll House

Fortunately, there are plenty of toys - toy fire station, toy fire truck, toy fire rescue helicopter - to name just a few. Fire station toys come in all shapes and sizes, are made of plastic or wood. Most importantly, all these toys allow kids to play at being firefighters - kids can pretend to put out fires, or save a firefighter stranded in a burning building. It is important for kids to not only emulate their heroes, but to also be able to help them - thus fully participating in the adventure. In playing with fire station toys, kids engage their imagination and creativity, practice problem solving, improve manual dexterity, and learn about the world. If parents join the play, even more learning takes place, as parents can explain thing from a grownup perspective and experience. And it's more fun too. Kids love to play with their parents and grandparents, and grownups can forget daily worries and have some fun as well.

So whether you are buying a Christmas gift, or a birthday gift, whether it's for a boy or a girl - get a fire station toy and see the delight in the child's face - and observe how many hours he or she will spend playing with the toy. Yes, the learning aspects are important, but they take care of themselves if children have fun with the toys. And toy firefighters are some of the most fun toys around.
