Becoming a firefighter is not just about the Fire Academy Firefighter I program. It's more than just the countless hours of training, demanding physical labor and sleepless nights. There aren't really words to explain sharing the heat, the zero visibility, the work of the search, facing what is unknown and different every single time. After 18 years in the service, I've given up trying to explain it because none of us who share the bond really can. The bond is one of the truest firefighter gifts that is earned and protected once it is yours.
There is a pride that comes from the badges and patches - and the fire trucks we spend hours taking care of so it can bring us to that time. The Class A uniforms that hang proudly and make us stand tall never feel as much a part of us as our bunker gear and helmets, worn to fit just right like a pair of your favorite jeans and navy blue firefighter t-shirt with your station maltese. Your equipment of choice tucked back in the same pockets after you use them so your hands can find them even if your eyes cannot.

Firefighters are fathers and mothers, grandparents, sons and daughters. We are aunts, uncles and cousins. We are your next door neighbor.We care for those we love, friends and co-workers and we care for strangers in their time of need.
We are from all different walks of life, rich and poor, middle class. Teachers, plumbers, doctors and lawyers. Students, car mechanics and accountants.
We are firemen and female firefighters and we are proud, dedicated and are always training, for the present and the future.

Firefighters. What makes us do it? After 18 years I still don't have the words for the answer.
Where else can you work your butt off, get too little sleep, work in often dangerous, hot, limited visibility environments and know the worse it was, the better you did your job. A team of people from every and any walk of life, all committed to their job, to eachother and to the communities they serve.
As one rookie firefighter said to me the other day, I don't know why I decided to do it, but I know why I want to keep on doing it. Well said.

Structure Fire Reported With Flames Showing On Arrival
Firefighters Save The Victim
Incident Command Chief reported fire in a house with a victim trapped on the second floor. The crew on the "first due" engine pulled a handline up the stairs, SCBA packed up, tools in hand and crawled their way through the smoke, located the victim and put the fire out. They worked together as a team, never lost communications and one of the firefighter gifts was present, teamwork!This was a training exercise. We train hard, we practice our skills as though the incident was real. We have to, because someday again, it will be. When the training is over, the packs are filled, the tools, gear and equipment back on the fire truck - stripped down to our t-shirts and jeans, we critique the drill. We learn from every experience. We share our firefighting and search tactics. The firefighter bond of brotherhood grows along with our experiences.

New Jersey Fire Dept Has Manifold Catastrophic Failure on Hydrant

Monday, April 20, 2009- Snap-tite Hose received notice of a catastrophic failure of a 5 way manifold in New Jersey thru their dealer. Following are some points of note from the email accounts they received. (See entire report info below)
1. A loud noise 'like a freight train' was heard before the failure occurred.
2. The gauge on the manifold did not register an increase in pressure (this was mentioned several times).
3. The local water company notified fire department personnel that they had 'high pressure on the hydrant' requiring manual control of the pressure at the pump station.
4. The relief valve on the manifold did not relieve.
The fire department also submitted several photos of the failed appliance which are posted.
Snap-tite's history with these units is very good. They are rarely returned for warranty repairs and there have been no warranty catastrophic failures.

- I have high respect for firefighters. They risk their lives to save others. They are the superheroes of today's generation and they sure deserve to be rewarded. Great lens you got here! Keep it up! I also have a great resource site about gifts - gifts for a sixtieth birthday
