Surface Design Is A Passion Of Mine

I went to trade school for Screen Process Printing and Photo Offset in the shadow of the World Trade Center, and it sparked my interest for all ways of creating imagery on fabric (and other surfaces too). All things Surface Design is a passion of mine.

Katazome A Dyeing Art

Katazome (Kata means stencil or pattern) is like silkscreening but a paste resist (made from rice bran or komon nuka and Mochiko a sweet rice flour) is used. A stencil is skillfully cut from Katagami paper (laminated layers of rice paper that is treated with persimon juice) and a gauze-like screen material is adhered to the stencil with laquer paint. Sometimes dye is added to the paste (Nazome), or the paste can be applied with something that resembles a pastry bag (Tsutsugaki-Zome).

Judy Ferony by Design

(To the Beat of My Own Drum)

I was raised in the Morris Park area of the Bronx where my family lived and worked for over 100 years. They helped build a church (and school), owned Deli's, Bars & Liquor Stores; and were part of a great Italian, Irish American community. Nothing is constant but change; most of my family are gone, there are no jobs in the neighborhood, and the businesses and properties my family once owned are long gone. The Deli's gave given way to 24 hours stores and bodegas, and most of the Catholic Schools have closed. They sure left a lot of ghosts.

I went to trade school for printing in the shadow of the World Trade Center, we never called it that, I always called it The Twin Towers. Now the Manhattan School of Printing and the World Trade Center are both gone; the equipment I learnt photo-offset and silkscreening on are now obsolete; giving way to Photoshop and Digital Photography. So you roll with the punches. I love Photoshop (heck I'd marry it if I could lol); and I have a point & shoot Canon Digital, but love my plastic fantastic Holga that still uses film (remember that?).

I'm unemployed right now, and I guess I'm just trying to find my groove. I started with Squidoo in 2006; it was love at first site, and I can't believe how things took off. Squidoo is one of the only sites that has managed to hold my attention all those years, even when I wasn't actively authoring Lenses. Lately I've stepped-up my Squidoo efforts, and would love to be able to make a living out of it, as well as my other online ventures; we'll see, it's a work in progress.

I have a Squidoo Circle called "23 Squidoo" on Google Plus; if your a Lensmaster (and on Google+) please do let me know and I'll add you. Well enough of me already; let me know a little about you by leaving a comment on my Lensmaster Page. Have a Great Day.

An Introduction To Katazome

Katazome Artist John Marshall

I just love John Marshall he is the founding father of Katazome in America; I have his book and video, and now he's on YouTube and he also has a web site and blog. John also gives classes around the country.

Fit To Be Tie Dyed Journals

The Deadicated Group

These Journals are great for the author in your life, makes a great gift; they were inspired by my marbleized Fat Quarters I made for the Art Quilt that I haven't quite started yet. The paints were floated on Irish Moss, and combed and swirled into random designs. Since the Fat Quarters are one of a kind I decided to use them for my CafePress graphics.

Tutti-Fruity Journal

I think this design was my favorite of all the Fat Quarters I made through the marbling process. I have also made Kindle & Nook Sleeves with the same graphic on them and will be adding to the product line over the next month.

Rainbow Zig-Zag Tie-Dye Journal

This is a Shibori zig-zag tie-dyed design the graphics were then used to design this journal in CafePress. You can also buy the shirt from me on eBay, my username is fit2btiedyed (I have 100% positive feedback so you may buy with confidence).

I attended the wholesale market where museum gift shops buy from artisans and serious crafters. It's a serious investment to do this show, they use to have one in August and the main one on February; the latter of the two is when the museums are restocking after the holidays (things may have changed so go to the site or show and ask questions).

Neat! I've always loved the look of tie dyed clothing.

Nice lens. My daughter loves to paint shirts and fabric. She was given a tri-chem paint set by her great grandmother that started her on her way.

I do "junk art." I didn't figure out I was an artist until about 3 years ago. I had to learn not to try so hard and make things I liked for no reason at all.
  • Deadicated May 6, 2012 @ 10:16 am | delete
Amen to that, that's why I always liked the "Just Do It" campaign; life is short and you have to do the things that make your hear sing and bring joy into your life. Thank you for your participation on my Lens; I've really been enjoying reading your Lenses. People ask me why I only have 20 Lenses and have been in it almost from the very beginning; the answer is I try to go for quality and not quantity (plus, I'm not very good at writing, truth be known but I try).
