All business owners must struggle with time management. As a personal trainer with a business, you also have to plan around the busy days of your clients. While each of us usually has a plan of attack for our daily lives, few of us actually know how to leverage our time.

Many people are conditioned to work by a list. Some are required to do so. 7 a.m. client, 8 a.m. meeting, 9 a.m. client, 9:30 client, 10:15 client, and on the list goes. When you're at home the to-do list has other duties for you.

That's a schedule. But there are better ways to utilize your time.

The power of leverage is all about balance. It's important to have a healthy balance of your time.

You cannot make improvements in your own balance if you have no idea where your life is on the scale. It's important to evaluate your current situation before you can do anything about it.

Keep a journal for a few days to a week. After the time period, determine the amount of time spent with your family.

  • Were you creative with a hobby or favorite sport (watching it on TV doesn't count)?

  • What was your last read?

  • What kind of time did you spend exercising?

  • Within that particular time, did you have a good read?

  • If yes, were you in it for work or just for the fun of it?

  • Did you spend time in any personal goals or endeavors, and if so, how much?


If you're stuck on a typical "to do" list schedule, chances are you'll see that your time is imbalanced in some of these areas. Calculate how you spent your time. How much time did you spend for business, family, personal health, books and other interests? Take note of the percentages. What percent of your time was spent on work versus family and other areas important to you? The results could surprise you!

This little journaling project gives you a chance to look at how you live your life and then choose how to change. Figure out what kind of time you want to devote to each aspect of your life.

When you understand the idea of time leverage, your life won't be held hostage by a "to do" list ever again! The "to do"list is an important way to track chores, but life should be more than a chore.
