Flagstone Patio Installation - Preparation and Laying Flagstones
1) Measure the shape and size of your flagstone patio. When you know how big the patio would be, use spray paint to mark the outline.
2) If your back yard has existing grass lawn, remove it. Clear the area of debris and weeds. Using a shovel, dig to a depth of about 5 inches around the edge of the patio and remove the 5 inches of dirt from the area of the patio and smooth out the bottom. You will be laying a foundation of sand, with flagstone on top.
3) Use edging around the outline of the patio that you made earlier on step 1. Make sure to use plastic edging if you want to outline the curve. Set the top of the edging slightly below ground level.
4) Pour in sand, use fine sand. Use the rented compactor to pack it down. You should create a solid 3" base of sand. For proper drainage, make sure that the sand is not level. It should slope slightly away from the house. If you do not have a sand compactor, use a 4 x 4 to help level the sand.
5) Now you are ready to lay the flagstone. Lay the flagstone and move the stones around to get the most pleasing arrangement of stones. If you do need to make cuts, mark where the cuts should be on the stones with chalk.
6) Remove the stones and make the necessary cuts and return the cut stones to their place in the patio flagstone arrangement.
7) Using a push broom, sweep the sand in between the spaces between the flagstone . The push broom can help get the sand in between cracks. Finally, run the compactor over the finished surface to pack the sand into the seams.
