All You Wanted To Know About Fire Resistant, Fire Retardant and Flame Retardant Products
Having read of another fire tragedy in the newspaper, my colleagues and I happened to discuss the fire hazard and how best we can prevent the fire accidents taking place in our neighborhood at the lunch hour. I was really surprised to hear some very crucial information about fire resistant products provided by my colleagues at the time of discussion. I noted some important points on a paper and gave it a final shape at home to discuss the same in the neighborhood on the coming weekend. Here is what I learnt -What Are Fire Resistant, Fire Retardant and Flame Retardant Products?
There are certain chemicals which when used in textiles, upholstery, curtains, carpets and other home furnishings can help slowing down and spreading of fire. There are certain fabrics that are made up of such materials that slow down the spread of fire.Fire Resistant Product: A fire resistant product is a chemical that has a quality of slowing down the spread of fire to a great extent. It helps fire fighters fight in emergency situations. A fine example of a fire resistant compound is a coupling agent. It is commonly known as a polymeric coupling agent.
Fire Retardant Product: A fire retardant substance helps preventing or delaying combustion. Water is the most common fire retardant. There are certain fabrics that are more resistant to fire than others. One such fabric is the polyester fabric. Many natural fibers can be treated chemically to reduce its inherent flammability.
Some fire retardant materials used in clothing are coated nylon, acrylic, polyester, Kevlar, Carbon Foam, Mazic, Kermel, etc. A fire retardant material resists burning and withstands heat. While fire retardant products are designed to burn slowly, products made of fire resistant materials are designed not to burn at all.
In the United States, 400,000 homes get damaged due to fire as per the National Fire Protection Association report retrieved on 2007-08.
Flame Retardant Product: flame retardant materials resist or inhibit the spread of fire. There are certain minerals such as asbestos, compounds such as magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide and various hydrates that work as flame retardant materials. In textiles, Tetrakis Phosphonium salts is used as flame retardant material.
Now that we know that such materials exist that can help spread of fire we must also have an idea how they work when the fire is on. What makes these materials work better in times of fire?
Do You Know?
Cotton and Linen are highly flammable but one can alleviate their burning rate by using flame-retardant chemical treatment.
How Can Using Fire Resistant, Fire Retardant and Flame Retardant Slow Spread of Fire
We do not use fire resistant and other materials in our daily lives as we a\turn a deaf ear to them. It is similar to the situation that we don't install security systems until we or some close person is robbed. The importance of these materials can be proved by the fact that using these fabrics can help saving the life of a loved one and can also help safety of your business premises.How Fire Resistant Work?
A fire resistant curtains or fabrics help spread of fire. Take for instance the polymeric coupling agent. It attaches inorganic filler such as calcium carbonate, talc, etc. to the polymer surroundings. Though not completely fire-proof, fire resistant mattresses, curtains, upholstered furniture, fabrics etc. can however minimize the occurrence of fire-related accidents.How Retardants Work?
A fire retardant retards the combustion process physically by either cooling, by forming a protective layer on the underlying fire-friendly material or by dilution. There are some retardants that release water or water vapor while burning.Chemically, the retardants initiate chemical reactions that prevent fire. Some retardants can interrupt the chemical reactions in the flame. Other break down polymers so that they melt and go away from the flame. There are some materials that add chemicals and end up providing better insulation.
Companies like Textile Cleaning and Protection use special solutions to treat porous materials and other fabrics. Their products are completely safe to use.
Fire retardants are used in fire extinguishers, textiles, home furniture, aerial fire fighting, etc. for ensuring safety.
How Flame Retardants Works?
The compounds of flame retardant material works by breaking down endothermically when it is subjected to high temperatures. They cool down the material by removing the heat from the surroundings. Some materials act as diluents and lowers down the per volume amount of heat of the material while burning. Some also act as a thermal insulation barrier between the burned and the unburned parts.“It is recommended to use the services of the specialized people for Carpet Cleaning”
Applications of Fire Resistant, Fire Retardant and Flame Retardant
You may be wondering where these fire resistant or flame retardant products find their applications. There are home owners who significantly want to invest on these products for safety purposes. But more than that, there are some businesses that excessively depend on these products.Some of them are -
Businesses Benefiting Hugely From Fire Resistant/Retardant Products
----> Hotels
----> Restaurants
----> Motels
----> Hospitals
----> Schools
----> Prisons
----> Offices
These businesses make an excessive use of fabrics and furnishings. A fire is likely to make a much serious damage to these businesses than others. Take for the instance Hotels. Hotels use mattresses, curtains, upholstered furniture and many other things that make use of lots of fabrics and materials. If a fire breaks, these fabrics which are highly flammable, especially the ones used in curtains, help the fire in spreading at a greater speed and in no time everything gets reduced to ashes.
People engaged in the above mentioned businesses are recommended to make use of flame or fire retardant products. Sometimes a little investment can save you from huge losses of life and property.
