It wasn't until 1911 however that the team received its Gator (Alligator) name, thanks to a vendor who was peddling his goods. It was also that very same year that the team made history with an undefeated season.

By 1923 Major James Van Fleet had taken over as coach and led them to national notoriety for the very first time. One year later, coach Harold Sebring and fellow player Edgar Jones, brought the team their first record for most points scored in a season.

It was coach Ray Graves however, who brought the team to three nine-win seasons and seventy victories in the 1960's. He also led them to play in their first sugar bowl game in 1966. But it was coach Steve Spurrier that gave them their four consecutive wins for the SEC Championship games between 1993 and 1996. It was also during that time that Spurrier outdid Ray Graves record and became the team's first coach to win the most games. Unfortunately, Steve Spurrier decided to leave the team in 2002 to pursue a job as coach for in the National Football League.

In 2004 the University decided to hire Urban Meyers as the new coach who since then has led the Florida Gators Football team to their fourth straight winning game against Tennessee and a defending win against the LSU Tigers, which proves so far that coach Meyers has been well worth his weight in gold.
