My Collection of Florida Subjects

This is a collection of all my lenses on Florida. That includes cities in Florida like Nokomis, Orlando, Sarasota, Sanibel Island, and Tampa, restaurants like Marina Jack's in Sarasota, animals that are often found in Florida like manatees and dolphins, birds like hawks and eagles and Florida theme products on Cafe Press. I made this sunset palm picture in Sarasota, Florida.

I have made several travel lenses because my husband and I are stock photographers and travel a lot for work. But we live in Florida, so, I have much more knowledge of places in Florida than any other single state. Because of the beautiful Florida beaches, great weather, and fascinating wildlife the general public has a continuing interest and need of information on those subjects.

Florida Cities

Here are some of my favorite Florida cities. They have either been my hometown or places I've visited frequently.
Nokomis, Florida
Nokomis, is a nice small town on Florida's West Coast with Oscar Scherer State Park and Casey Key beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Pictures and videos we made while eating at Nokomis restaurants, my Nokomis Beach sunset video, 2002 population statistics, and more information on places to stay and things to do in Nokomis fill the lens.
Orlando, Florida
When you think of Orlando, Disney is the next name that pops into your mind. I know, this photo was made on one of my visits to the Magic Kingdom. But Orlando is sooooo much more. Take a look at the other side of this Florida city.
Sanibel Island, Florida
Sanibel Island, Florida, is a great place to visit if you like beach, fishing, birding, boating, or just chilling out in the winter sunshine. Ding Darling is a world famous drive through wildlife refuge park with walking trails that is on the bird migration fly through. This lens is full of my photographs, videos, and information on places to stay and fun things to do.
Sarasota, Florida
Sarasota, located on Florida's west coast, is a great place to live or visit. The weather is warm all year long, the beaches have lots of sand and sea shells, and there are parks, museums, and world class stores to shop. Boats of all kinds are available to rent at the downtown Sarasota bay front park for fishing or just looking. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens conservatory has a huge display of exotic tropical orchids for the flower lovers. Mote Marine Laboratory has a wide variety of tropical fish and huge tanks with manatees or dolphins.
Tampa, Florida
Tampa, Florida, is a city with lots to see and do. As photographers we visit Tampa several times a year to work. The zoo has an extensive collection of wild animals. There are several interesting museums including The Tampa Museum of Art and the Museum of Science and Industry.
Busch gardens have wild animals and wilder amusement rides. The beaches at St. Petersburg are nearby and very popular. Gasparilla is an entertaining Pirate festival every year and an exhausting marathon race, too. Plus professional hockey, baseball, and football teams for sports fans.
Vacation in Fort Meyers or Sarasota?
Which city is better for a Florida vacation, Fort Meyers or Sarasota? I think Sarasota is better than Fort Meyers for your vacation because there is more to do. Both cities have beaches, but Sarasota has Mote Marine Laboratory, the Ringling Museums, Ringling Mansion, and Ringling Art Museum, and more.

Marina Jack's in Sarasota, FL
Marina Jack's restaurant is located downtown in the Sarasota Marina, right on Sarasota Bay. They have fine dining upstairs and casual dining on the first floor and outside on the patio. There is also a piano bar on the patio. Marina Jacks serves sunset dinners on their cruise ship, too. Here is the d
Chef Rolf
Rolf Zahnd is a talented Swiss chef who has established himself and his family in Nokomis, Florida. My family has had the pleasure of eating often in his Saltwater Cafe. My personal favorite meal was on Mother's Day 2008.
Sarasota Restaurant Guide
I live in this area and have been asked several times by tourists to recommend a good restaurant. So, this eating guide is my way of helping visitors to Sarasota, Florida, enjoy their time here.Your experiences may be different, so there is space for you to agree or disagree with my ratings.

Sandhill Crane eats from our bird feeder

This is the cutest bird video I have made. Three sandhill cranes walked through our front yard as I ate breakfast. They stopped and took turns eating from our bird feeder. Their bills are so long and thin that they can go right into the feeder for seeds.

Florida Wildlife

Dolphin Information
Learn about dolphins, share your experiences with dolphins, swim with dolphins, find great dolphin gear!I made this dolphin picture while working at Sea World. I also made the dolphin pictures in the Florida Keys and the dolphin video at Mote Marine that appear on this lens.
Manatee Information
We photographed this beautiful Manatee at Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, Florida. There are two manatees in a huge tank there. The manatees were injured by boat propellers and brought back to health by Mote. In the 2003 statewide survey 3,113 manatees were counted in Florida waters.
Best of Manatees on Twitter
Manatees, often called Sea Cows, are marine mammals found in Florida waters. I photographed this manatee at Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, Florida. Check out Manatee Information for more manatee pictures and video.
Eagles Bird of Prey
The majestic Bald Eagle is the American national symbol. We photographed this bird at Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa. We have seen eagle nests, but, couldn't get close enough for a good photograph of the birds. You can see eagles in their Maine nest with baby chick on the video link below.
Hawk Bird of Prey
We photographed this hawk at Myakka State Park, Sarasota, Florida. The hawks there are so used to people that they land on railings and dead trees quite close to the boardwalk. For the past 15 years we have photographed hawks in Florida.
Sandhill Crane Pictures and Information
We photographed this sandhill crane walking in our neighborhood. The cranes were 3 to 4 feet tall and had no fear of humans. When they chose to walk across a city street, the cars all had to stop and wait for them to pass. The Gulf Coast of Florida is a great area in which to observe Sandhill cranes
Bird Feeder Visitors
Two bird feeders sit just outside our front window. We enjoy watching the different bird species that come to sample our bird seed. Here's where we sit to watch the avian visitors. We keep bird identification books handy because it's more fun when you know the name of your visitors.
Nature Walk
Come on a nature walk with me. We'll visit Red Bug Slough Nature Preserve in Sarasota, Florida. First off, what is a 'slough' anyway? A slough is a kind of fresh water swamp with trees. Sloughs get their water from rainfall.

My video of manatee swimming at Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, Florida.

Mote Marine Laboratory, Sarasota, Florida, is a great place to view manatee, dolphin, turtles, and a wide variety of tropical fish. Mote also offers short cruises to the surrounding habitat to see birds and animals in the wild.

Florida Places for Entertainment / Education

Places to go in Florida where you and the family can be entertained while everyone learns something at the same time.
Mote Marine Laboratory
Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, is a fascinating place for the whole family to visit. There are tropical fish, shark tanks, and the cafe in the first building. A nearby building houses turtles, floor to ceiling aquarium tank for manatee, large outdoor tanks for dolphins, and shark tanks.
Circus Museum in Sarasota
The Ringling Brothers Circus used to winter in Sarasota, Florida. John and Mable Ringling built a mansion here. The Ringling mansion, Art Museum, Circus Museum and a beautiful Rose Garden, all on a 66 acre estate, were left to the State of Florida on John Ringling's death.
Repticon Reptile Convention
If you love snakes, chameleons, frogs, turtles, rabbits, spiders or other exotic animals, this is the place for you. Repticon hosts these shows all over the east coast of the United States. The show is the perfect way to introduce your children to exotic animals, too.
Sarasota RV Parks
Sarasota and neighboring Bradenton, Nokomis, and Venice all have R.V. parks. Some also include manufactured homes in the same park. Sarasota has 6 RV parks. They are very different one from another. Two are featured here, each with very different settings. More will soon be added.
