Waterfront Florida LIving

Living on a sailboat is a lifestyle that many people have adapted to . Some people live on a sailboat as small as 22 feet and find it quite comfortable. Living aboard takes a bit of sacrifice as you might imagine, but for many who choose this way of life, they feel it's worth it

If you plan on staying in United States waters, consider living in a marina, where you can hook up to shore power for everyday conveniences. Living at a marina simplifies things for most people as you have access to bathrooms, laundry and parking. However, there are some marinas that don't allow "live aboards".

The warmer weather in places like Florida and California make living there a year-round possibility. That makes these waterfront areas very popular for many who want to live aboard sailboats. Some people even manage to work regular full time jobs or run their own business. It's also possible to sail between ports between seasons, such as Long Island in the summer and Florida in winter.

Gulfport, Tampa Bay's hidden Gem

Living in Florida

Boca Ciega Bay, Gulfport, FloridaGulfport, Florida
This sleepy seaside town was established in 1889 as Disston City. The name was changed to Gulfport in 1910. Originally a fishing village and the first settlement in southern Pinellas county, the adjacent town of St. Petersburg, which was started after, is where the railroad was built, and grew quickly to become the largest city in the area. Gulfport declined as St. Petersburg grew.

In recent decades it became a bastion of liberal open-mindedness, attracting many singles and retirees. It's long fishing pier is a local favorite. The old casino on the beach has been redone into a dance and party hall. The Catherine Hickman Theater and the Stetson Law school brings many visitors. The old cottages and bungalows in the waterfront district have been restored and command high prices. Boca Ciega Bay is a sailing favorite, and on alternating friday and saturday evenings an art walk keeps shops and restaurants open late. Well worth a visit.

Sailing School Adventures

Florida Living

Boca Ciega Bay, Gulfport, FloridaIn the spring of 2003, I was living in Gulfport, Florida. Sailing is big there. Boca Ciega bay is only about 9 feet deep at the most. I was feeling a bit bored, and needed a challenge. The all-volunteer Boca Ciega Yacht Club was offering six weeks of sailing lessons at the lowest price in the entire Tampa Bay area. They do this on every spring and fall. The course was divided into classroom training on Wednesday evening, plus sailing every Saturday and Sunday. Great weather every time, never a cancelled class. Other that a few drops once or twice, no rain at all.

The capsize drill was definitely exciting. They had an especially modified old boat that would be taken out to waist deep water, and intentionally turned over with students on board, then we had to swim around to the transom, this is the back end of the boat, and get back aboard. The transom is the lowest part of the boat, and easiest to climb aboard. I tried and tried to swing my legs over into the transom, but was so tired I gave up. The teach brought the boat closer to shore so I could step aboard. Embarrassing.

We covered a lot in six weeks. How to read wind conditions, safety equipment, man overboard drill, how to sail around a point, racing.

One day we sailed to a deserted spit of land, a tiny key with a few bushes, a few miles from the yacht club, and had a great picnic. We were divided into four boats, each carrying four people. Lots of picture taking. On another day we went farther, passing the little key to a dockside seafood restaurant in St.Pete Beach, which is no longer there. A big tasty fish sandwich for lunch.

At least once we held a race, which got a bit testy. I had never been on one, and was slow to catch on. What were the rules exactly? I had no idea. I was with another guy, and he got upset because we lagged behind so often. I took it all in fun, and wasn't that concerned.

Florida Power & Light has signed an agreement with developer Kitson and Partners to build the largest photovoltaic plant in the world at Babcock Ranch, a planned new city south of Tampa and east of Fort Myers. Plans for the city include six million square feet of retail, office, commercial, light industrial, and civic space.

The seventeen thousand acre city will be the world's first to be powered by zero emission solar energy, with a smart grid that will allow residents and businesses to monitor energy usage. Groundbreaking is late this year, subject to state approval. Construction of the central city would begin early 2010 and the first residential construction in late 2010.

Choosing the Right Tent

A tent for Florida is not suitable for the mountains of Colorado. Tents manufacturers label of a season, two / three seasons, three or four seasons, four seasons, etc. Three season should be for the spring / summer / autumn and can withstand fairly heavy rain or light snow possible. A four-season tent should be suitable for winter camping in all but the most extreme Terms, plus provide protection against heavy snow, strong wind and rain.

If you are camping in the deserts of the south-west, probably will not be concerned about the waterproof tent, but campsite in the northwest Pacific is another matter. Check the manufacturer descriptions to determine if the tent with silicone impregnation or polyurethane coatings are.

Modern tents are usually made of fire retardant material, but your safety can be improved if you do not smoke in your tent heaters or lights the flame in a tent, or have the fire too close to the tent.
