Ford Rat Rods For Sale - So Whats A Rat Rod?

Ford Rat rods For Sale have found their way to be a popular item at eBay Motors and on vintage car message boards. In recent years, as a result of a number of classic car related reality shows, there has been a renewed interest in classic car restoration and ownership.  The term Rat Rod has entered the lexicon of American culture.

For those of you who are still confused, I will give you a little background information so it makes more sense. By the time I finish, maybee, you, will just itching to resolve that mid-life crisis and find some Ford Rat Rods For Sale.

According to the folks at SEMA,  A rat rod is considered to be a pre-1949 American vehicle which has been finished to look like it was built by a 1940's hot-rodding enthusiast.  There is often no exterior top coat, with either a layer of rust or exposed metal burnished to a shiny patina.  For those that are painted primer or flat black finish, is the norm. There is little or no chrome and the interior is unfinished.

For myself, I disdain the carefully worded minutia of the SEMA car snobs.  Any year, well-used looking American car or truck can qualify as a rat rod except mini-vans (yuck). The only foreign cars I would include are mid-1970's and before VW Bugs and the older Micro-Bus (vehicles of the Dead Head).   The VW's have been an integral part of American culture and deserve, in my opinion, to be included.

Regarding the first appearance of the Rat Rod, the car snobs once again are in an endless debate.  However, The first appearance of the Rat Rod can be attributed to the popularization of a 32 Ford Roadster owned by Artist Robert Williams.   Others dispute this fact, but, WHO CARES!!

This Lens is dedicated to Ford Rat Rods. Below, you will find a brief history of the classic Ford Model A, And Model T automobiles.  In addition I have included some photographs of some common Ford rat rods.  If you are interested in finding out more about finding a Rat Rod, a great place to start is The Rat Rod Barn where you will find Rat Rod Project Cars to fully restored trailer queens as well as parts for many makes and models.

Ford Model T History

The original inspiration for the Classic Rat Rod

The Ford Model T (colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie and Flivver) is an automobile that was produced by Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company from 1908 through 1927. The Model T set 1908 as the historic year that the automobile came into popular usage. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that "put America on wheels"; some of this was because of Ford's innovations, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting, as well as the concept of paying the workers a wage proportionate to the cost of the car, so that they would provide a ready made market.Ford also attempted a buy on time program to aid sales, resembling that of the German Kdf-Wagen (forerunner of the Volkswagen Type 1). Ford's plan was not a success, either. The first production Model T was built on September 27, 1908, at the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan.

There were several cars produced or prototyped by Henry Ford from the founding of the company in 1903 until the Model T came along. Although he started with the Model A, there were not 19 production models (A through T); some were only prototypes. The production model immediately before the Model T was the Ford Model S,Early Ford - models from the years 1903 - 1908; p. 5. an upgraded version of the company's largest success to that point, the Model N. The follow-up was the Ford Model A and not the Model U. Company publicity said this was because the new car was such a departure from the old that Henry wanted to start all over again with the letter A. As it happens, the first Plymouth car (1928), built by competitor Chrysler Corporation, was named the Model U.

The Ford Model T was named the world's most influential car of the twentieth century in an international poll.[http://info.detnews.com/joyrides/story/index.cfm?id=75 Joyrides | Car of the Century? Ford's Model T, of course]. Henry Ford said of the vehicle:

"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one - and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."

Ford Model A History

The Ford Model A (1927?1931) was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced on October 20, 1927, but not sold until December 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. This new Model A (a previous model had used the Model A name back in 1903?1904) was designated as a 1927 model and was available in four standard colors, but not black.

The Model A was produced through 1931. When production ended in March, 1932, there were 4,849,340 Model A's made in all styles. Its successor was the Model B, which featured an updated 4-cylinder engine, followed by the Model 18 which introduced Ford's new V8 engine.
