Forward Head Posture- A Painful Neck Posture
Ranked #402 in Healthy Living, #8,295 overall
Forward head posture- It is more common than you think...
In 1980, Dr. Roger Sperry A nobel prize recepient for brain research showed that 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body to gravity. Only 10% has to do with thinking, metabolism and healing (when you have normal head posture). So if you carry your head posture in a forward position, your brain will rob energy from your thinking, metabolisms, and healing because it will need more than the normal 90% energy output to deal with it.

Why do we develop Forward Head Posture?
This is the most common postural alignment today. The reason is because of the positions we regularly put ourselves in. If we are always looking down for example, the body gets used to that. Over time this shifts tour head downward. Also, as degeneration and arthritis sets in we tend to lose some disc height and curvature in our spine. This breakdown and straitening in the spine will show in our posture. Lastly, whiplash type injuries will cause us to lose normal neck alignment and therefore posture. When we think "whiplash", we think of a car accident, but you can get this injury playing sports, a nasty fall, or other trauma to the neck.
These days it is more common than ever. More and more of us work on the computer, then take a break only to text, and then go home and work with a laptop in our lap, then read in bed with our head propped on three pillows. Notice that everyone of these things put us in forward head posture!

"For every inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 lbs."
- Kapandji, Physiology of Joints, Vol 3.

Sometimes you can even see it from the front if it's bad. The easiest way is to have someone look at you from the side. The shoulder shoulder should line up with the ear, if not then you may have forward head. Another trick is to get a picture of yourself from the side. Cervical Traction Neck Pillow
The Traction Pillow Helps Correct Neck Posture While You Sleep.
"I have a slight reverse curve in my neck and routinely get migraines. I purchased this pillow hoping it would help and have been using it for about a month now. At first it made my neck hurt more and made my neck very stiff because my neck was not used to being in that position. After a few days though, it made my neck feel really good. My neck actually hurts more now if I do not use the pillow. We will see how much it helps my headaches long term, since it takes time to work. The one negative I have is that you have to sleep in a particular position for the pillow to work. Yes, you can sleep on your back or either side. However, if you sleep on your right side, you have to sleep on the right side of the pillow (not the center or the left). It is not a big deal, but is a minor inconvenience. " Allison, Boston MA July 31, 2010
5 out of 5: "Best pillow ever! I had a neck injury that lasted for several months. I could never find a good pillow that could help me sleep despite my pain. Well the Arc4life Cervical Traction Neck pillow did the trick. I have been able to sleep better without inflamming my injury. I think this will be the last pillow I buy now!" - s2wcreid October 17, 2010

i bought this item for my brother in law He is having terrible neck problems and I have an arm that keeps going numb. I thought I would buy it, try it and then give it to him It looked strange and I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to put it on. I lay down and began to "pump" the thing, and I believe i said "ahhhhhhh" outloud I reached a point in pumping where suddenly my arm was not numb anymore! After I took it off my head felt so light! I had been having trouble with my back and have been studying about it. There is one school of thought that believes back trouble starts at the head...that your head needs to sit even on your neck (don't laugh) I began to look at people and sure enough..most people's heads usually lean to one side My brother in law has disc compression in his neck and he went "ahhhhhhh" too and thought he could sleep with this thing on LOL One remarkable thing was that whatever it did to my neck..it lasted all day! L.Maupin April 1, 2008
From the first time I used this, as my chiropractor's office, my neck has felt better than ever. I've had chronic neck problems for more than 30 years, and this is the first thing that has made a lasting and significant difference. I notice more blood flow to my head, and I feel clearer the whole day through. I sit, stand and walk more comfortably. I feel taller. My neck is improving noticably day by day. - Definitely an increasingly common problem - particularly given the increased amounts of time we spend in front of computers and watching tv and the common posture while doing so.
I have put together a lens specifically on whiplash which might complement this topic quite well if you fancy taking a look.
Good lens.
