FRANK HERBERT - The greatest science fiction writer of all time.

Franklin Patrick Herbert, Jr. (October 8, 1920 - February 11, 1986) was a critically acclaimed and commercially successful American science fiction author. He is best known for the novel Dune and its five sequels. The Dune saga, set in the distant future and taking place over millennia, deals with themes such as human survival and evolution, ecology, Sociobiology, the consequences of consciousness altering chemicals, and the intersection of religion, politics and power. Dune Trailer Remastered

The movie was shamefully shallow, in comparison to the lofty themes and extremely intricate plot of Frank Herbert's Novel, but David Lynch did do a good job, capturing the imagery of the Dune Universe.

Dune: The Movie

The movies production history is amazing, I wish Alejandro Jodorowsky would have completed the 10 hr. epic with his "his seven samurais".

The Following is an excerpt from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_%28film%29

In 1975, Alejandro Jodorowsky tried to film the story as a ten hour feature, in collaboration with Orson Welles, Dan O'Bannon, Salvador DalĂ, Gloria Swanson and others (nicknamed by him as "his seven samurais"). The music would have been done by Pink Floyd. Jodorowsky set up a pre-production unit in Paris that consisted of Chris Foss, a British artist who designed covers for science fiction periodicals, Jean Giraud (Moebius), a French illustrator who created and also wrote and drew for Metal Hurlant magazine, and H. R. Giger.
