Background on the Park
The park is named to honor Frances "Franny" Reese (1917-2003), a Scenic Hudson co-founder and a leading advocate for protecting the Hudson Valley's natural and historic treasures. The park contains ruins of former estate buildings as well as a Hudson River overlook with rustic benches made of native stone added in 2009.
Scenic Hudson purchased the property in 2003 to protect it from development and preserve it as a public resource. New York State assumed ownership in 2006. The park will be managed for public use by Scenic Hudson and other agencies.
Originally the property overlooking the Hudson was an estate called Ceder Glen. It was owned by Dr. Roberts, who was the father of painless dentistry. His financial success was due to his investments in railroads. After his death in 1909 at age 89, there was some family turmoil as his children tried to gain control of the two million dollar estate. The estate fell into disuse and was reclaimed slowly by vegetation.
There are two entrances to the park: Johnson-Iorio Park at the end of Haviland Road and Macks Lane.
