"Fred", the Egyptian Goose

This is about an Egyptian Goose we call "Fred".

He lives in a park along the river near our home in PA.

This is a very unusual finding for Southwestern Pennsylvania, as his ancestors are from Africa.

I noticed Fred one day while photographing Greylag Geese babies this summer.

There was an odd looking bird hanging around with the adult geese. The bird seemed to be helping keep watch over the babies.

We head to the river every morning to visit Fred and his goose friends. And sometimes the ducks are there too.

All I can say is "Fred" is a blessing to us. He proves that being different and unique are okay.

He is still one of the gang and gets along with everyone!

Fred is BACK!

We wondered if he would ever return.

December 2008 was getting really cold, and we wondered if Fred would be okay. Soon she disappeared.

We often wondered what happened to her. We kept an eye out for her every time we visited the park. Would she return, would we ever get to see our "friend" again?

Well, today, July 25, 2009, we were sitting in our usual pavilion and we hear a strange, but familiar, honking sound. It wasn't the Graylags. It wasn't the Canadians. I sure sounded like our old friend Fred!

So we headed to the shore, camera in hand and spot some thing across the river on the rocks. What do I do? Whip out the camera, zoom in and take a photo. I then check my photo after zooming in even more, and guess what? FRED!

So I sent my sweetie to get bread, and the rest is "photo time"!

I will be putting up several new ones of Fred, but this photo says a lot: "I'm back"!

This was our first "real" photo of Fred!

Shy at first. This was July 2008.

Fred is no longer shy! He comes right up to us now!

Meet some of my Friends!!!

Even though I do not look like them, these geese are my friends!

We hang around with the ducks sometimes, too!

FRED HAS A NEW FRIEND! HE'S DIFFERENT TOO!

We saw this duck about 3 weeks ago, and never saw him again until two days ago.

He wouldn't let me take his photo! But today, I got tons of photos of this little guy!

He is a Green-winged Teal! And he is different, just like "Fred"! His name is "Simon"!

Meet "Ralph & Alice"

A "couple" Muscovy Ducks!

These new friends flew in about a week ago.

Fred welcomed them to, just like he welcomed "Simon" into the group!

Fred has quite a few "unusual" friends---just like him!

Fred has beautiful wings!

We always wondered what Fred's wings looked like.

As he strolls around, you'd never guess what a beauiful pattern of colors his wings are.

One day, he showed us!

Must stay beautiful!

Fred must make sure he looks his best, since he is such a unique bird to this area.

And he does.

Yesterday after is "breakfast", he headed to the river for a bath.

Thankful Fred

"I love life!"

Here is Fred, just relaxing and pondering what to do next.

He looks beautiful watching over the water.

Actually, he hears his goose friends playing in the water. Shortly after this photo, he flew down to them!

In South Florida we have a criminal catching large amounts of Geese (Including Egyptians), I was touched by your story. I hope Fred never come to Florida. This man is out of control and there are others destroying wild life. You can find more about this evil man www.sunsentinel.com/ducks , the name of this man is Austin Lee Corley, 19 years old.
Please pray for us, all people here are organizing, to stop this man.

Hello! I see that you have used a couple of my Egyptian Geese pictures from my flickr page! That's very exciting. We have a few Egyptian Geese near my apartment complex. There are at least 3 adults (1 male and 2 female) and there are now some almost fully grown chicks. I actually have a whole bunch of pictures of them. I invite all to check out my pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mleongkee/sets/72157617440683376/.

I also wanted to say "Nice page!" I think the Egyptian goose is quite magnificent. I'm glad to know there are more out there in the US. From a recent bird conducted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, it appeared that there were only reported cases of Egyptian Geese here in South Florida.
