Who Is Freddy Fender ?

Born Baldemar Huerta, Fender was proud of his Mexican-American heritage and frequently sung verses or whole songs in Spanish. "Teardrop" had a verse in Spanish.

David Letterman once introduced Freddy Fender to his Latenight audience as "one of the greatest voices in all of music."

"What I've loved about playing for Freddy", says Conrad Askland (played keyboards with Freddy Fender since 1996 traveling all across the United States, Europe and Asia), "is that he is genuinely as he appears to fans. He is simple, funny and his art comes with effortless ease".

Fender hit it big in 1975 after some regional success, years of struggling - and a stint in prison. During the dawn of the Texas "Outlaw Movement", Freddy's major breakthrough came when "Before The Next Teardrop Falls" topped both the country and pop music charts. With its success, he won the Academy of Country Music's best new artist award in 1975. Another gold record classic, the re-released "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights", followed, as did another crossover smash hit, "Since I Met You Baby". "Secret Love" and "You'll Lose a Good Thing" also hit No. 1 in the country charts. "Secret Love", was written by Freddy but became a number one hit for Doris Day. Between 1975 and 1977, he had nine songs in the country top ten charts!

Freddy broadened his career to acting in the 1980's including a co-starring role in the 1987 Robert Redford indie smash, "Milagro Beanfield War".

In 1990 he formed the Tex-Mex supergroup, "The Texas Tornadoes" with Doug Sahm, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers. After three albums, the group disbanded, and Fender again resumed his solo career.

In 1997 He sang "A Little Bit is Better Than Nada" as the title cut to the motion picture "Tin Cup"

He won a Grammy of Best Latin Pop Album in 2002 for "La Musica de Baldemar Huerta." He also shared in two Grammys: with the Texas Tornados, which won in 1990 for best Mexican-American performance for "Soy de San Luis," and with Los Super Seven in the same category in 1998 for "Los Super Seven.
I

t is important to the history of Tejano music that all aspects of Freddy's career are recognized and respected. He is the most unique pioneer of all Tex Mex music which sprouted in Texas and spread to the rest of the world.

Casey Monahan, former music critic and director of the Texas Music Office in Austin, has this to say about Freddy, "Texas has been blessed with a handful of singular voices that define the sound of our state and the pinnacle of artistic expression. Freddy is in the company of a very few that includes Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly."

Before The Next Teardrop Falls

From YouTube

The Texas Tornados was a band Freddy Fender played with.

I had some great YouTube videos of Freddy Singing some of his greatest hits...but these videos have been removed from YouTube, I'm sorry to say.

I think it's shortsighted to prohibit the showing of video on YouTube or other internet options. The opportunity to reach millions of new fans is lost. If people like what they hear and like the music, they are more likely to buy the music. I doubt that anyone that would buy albums in the first place would rather have the YouTube version. It's like getting food samples at the grocery store. No one thinks that will suffice as a meal.

And it not like Freddy Fender music gets played on commercial radio very often. How are you going to reach new fans?

This is the perfect venue...I wonder when they will see this?

Anyway, you will enjoy the videos I have here!

Wasted Days and Wasted Nights Lyrics

Wasted days and wasted nights
I have left for you Behind
For you don't belong to me
Your heart belongs to someone else

Why should I keep loving you,
When I know that you're not true
And why should I call your name
When you're the blame for making me blue

Don't you remember the day
That you went away and left me
I was so lonely
Prayed for you only, my love

Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you're not true
And why should I call your name
When you're the blame for making me blue

[Musical Interlude]

Don't you remember the day
That you went away and left me
I was so lonely
Prayed for you only, my love

Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you're not true
And why should I call your name
When you're the blame for making me blue

La Musica De Baldemar Huerta
It has taken five decades, but for the first time in his storied, sometimes checkered career, Freddy Fender delves deeply into the music of his forefathers: the boleros and rancheras that would have played in the ghettos of his native San Benito, Texas, and that he sang as a youth in border-town cantinas. Backed by a veteran trio of San Antonio guitarists--Juan Aguilar, Pancho Perez, and requinto master Chepe Solis--simple percussion, and tastefully arranged strings, Fender wraps his voice (as clear, vulnerable, and evocative as ever) around the long, round vowels of the Spanish language, and leaves few emotional stones unturned. Especially gorgeous are "Adios Muchachos," a melancholy meditation on final farewells, and the delicate opener, "Rayito de Luna." El Be Bop Kid isn't just back; he sounds reborn. --Roy Kasten

I first heard Freddy Fenders' music in 1975 while working in the shipping department of an import-export firm in 1975 and in of all places New York City!...this just goes to show the universal appeal that has and regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social class, good lyrics and creatively produced music endures!
