Free Agent Resource Guide
There is an exciting underground world of useful (and often free) applications, communities, software and tools that cater to the freelancer or entrepreneur. This guide is an aggregated list of over 200 of the top low- or no-cost services on the web.
A few notes before you dive in:
Don't forget to vote!
1. The resources are organized by category, such as "communication tools" and "dollars and sense." Functions often overlap, however, so we'd encourage you to check out all the sections. You might find something that you didn't even know you needed. Use the Table of Contents above to see a list of categories and subcategories so that you can easily find the type of resource you're looking for!2. Our small company of three people put the initial list together however it's the wisdom of the crowd (that's you and your fellow free agents) that will make this list truly valuable. So, please VOTE, ADD TO THE LIST, AND COMMENT ON THE RESOURCES so that the very best will standout and rise to the top.
3. We've done our very best to research and test these resources but can't take responsibility for their function, availability or legal usage. And while they were all up and running at the time we posted this, some creators may have since moved on or stopped offering their online tools. (Please let us know if you find a service that is no longer available and we'll take it down.)
Thanks!

1. Day-to-Day Operations
Coworking Spaces
Many free agents work "from home," which often means setting up their laptops anywhere Wi-Fi and caffeine are available. But if you're tired of the café scene (and hearing that new Alicia Keys album on repeat), coworking spaces are a great alternative. These communal workspaces provide a calm, comfortable place to work, without the hassle and expense of setting up a full office of your own. Most coworking spaces rent out desks, offices, and/or meeting rooms and offer amenities ranging from espresso machines to fax and printing stations.
There are hundreds of coworking spaces across the country and around the globe - almost all of which can be found at the coworking wikii listed below.

2. Collaborative Tools and Technologies
Wikis
Wikis offer an efficient and powerful way to facilitate online collaboration. As you build and grow your business, you can use wikis to share information, ideas and links, which your employees, collaborative partners and/or brand community can access and build on.
Wikis are collaborative websites where anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can edit and upload content. Wikipedia.org is currently the most famous wiki, and while this massive online encyclopedia is open to the public, you can create a private wiki for group members, partners and/or clients. Wikis are an efficient way to build on ideas and share information, because everyone works from the same site - eliminating the endless back-and-forth email exchanges and duplicate work. Once you've signed-up for a wiki, you simply click the 'edit' button and start typing as you would in a typical Word document. Once you click 'save,' the website (wiki) will reflect your latest changes.

Data / Computer Backup and Mobile Access
Protect your most valuable assets - information and content!
We've all experienced that panicked moment when you realize that your valuable information is lost...forever. Applications freeze, computers get stolen, buttons are accidentally pushed, power surges during a storm, or coffee meets keyboard. It's painful, frustrating, and completely unnecessary.
Instead, use one of the following file storing sites to back up your files online. These sites offer peace of mind and provide a way to access your documents from outside computers. Many of these sites automatically update your files whenever you're connected to the Internet, so you'll always have access to the most recent versions of your documents.

4. Creative Tools and Toys
Photo Sharing, Organizing and Printing
Many of us have hundreds of photos that we've been meaning to organize into albums, scrapbooks and presentations, but we never get around to actually doing it. All too often, the memorable events of our lives are kept hidden in shoeboxes or shared only with the small group of people who happen to look under the coffee table or at our screen saver.
With online photo sharing, you can easily organize and share your captured memories without going through the expense of making prints and photo albums. Using one of the sites below, you can upload digital photos (with optional comments, descriptions and tags) to the web. From the trunk show in Paris to your company's first live event, the memorable pieces of your life and work (both photo and video) can easily be shared with as many - or as few - people as you'd like.

5. Social Networks and Communities
Social networks are an extremely efficient way to keep in contact with a large community of friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Social networks provide tools that allow users to build a virtual identity (with personality), share information and media through blogs, photos, videos, music, links to other content, etc, and find friends or make new contacts.
These communities are also transforming business models and providing new opportunities for personal and specialized business marketing. Depending on the site you choose and how you use it, you can build a brand community, showcase your talent, sell your products or services, and collect referrals and recommendations.
The following is a list of some of the most popular social networks. If you don't already belong to a social network, start by asking your friends, family and colleagues what they're using and tour the sites to see if they're right for you and/or your business. You can stick with one or join multiple networks.

Financial Management and Accounting
Managing money is often the bane of the free agent who would rather develop ideas, make connections or sell products. These applications will help you keep track of revenues and expenses, get prepared for tax season, and keep it all together, financially speaking.

Peer-to-Peer Lending and Social Financing
We all know it takes money to make money. So, what do you do if you don't have the initial capital you need to get your idea off the ground? Four common money sources for free agent startups are: bank loans, family and friends, credit cards and the SBA-all of which have their downsides, ranging from lengthy qualification processes to relationship strain to high interest rates.
Now there's a fifth option called peer-to-peer lending. In lending networks, individuals can obtain loans from everyday people looking to lend money-be it your Aunt Aida or a stranger from New Haven. Similar to eBay, lenders compete to make loans, which often results in lower interest rates for borrowers than what they would normally experience from an unsecured bank loan.
