Introduction to Proxy

Have you ever been IP blocked from a site or banned from a forum? Some forums when they ban you use what is know as IP blocking to stop you not only from posting on their forums but it also stops you viewing their forums.

One of the ways round this is to use a Proxy to fool the system and get back on the forum. You won't be able to post though because your username and password will be blocked. But by going through the Proxy you should soon be able to resign up for the forum and bypass the ban.

Proxies can be used for other things as well. Annonymous Proxies hide you from view so that people can't IP trace you and is especially good for ICQ and IRC.

Forum Bans

Its a lot easier than you think to get banned from some forums with their Castroite rules. You can be banned just by posting your honest opinion on stuff. I personally got banned from a game forum by moaning about the lack of new content (a lot), because these types of posts give the company a negative image they kept removing my posts (not all my post tho) until they banned me.

There are loads of other fellow game players that have been banned from the same forum for various reasons. It seems like the American freedom of speech is thrown out the window when it comes to forums.

Proxy 4 Free

Proxy 4 Free is a website full of pages and pages of free proxy addresses. It also has good information on what a Proxy is and the reasons for using Proxy servers.

The only thing I couldnt find on the site is instructions on how to use them.

Heres the link to the first Proxy list on Proxy 4 Free

How to use the FREE Proxy addresses

Actually once you know what you are doing use the free Proxy addresses is easy. I will use Internet Explorer for the example (it shouldn't be much difference in Opera or Firefox or whichever browser you use). By the way this only works if you on LAN.

Click on the Tools Menu and select Internet Options

Click on the Connections tab then click on the Lan Settings button.

In the proxy server section tick the box labelled 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'. Put the proxy address in the address box and the port number in the port box then click ok.

If you have done everything correctly you should now be able to visit any sites you are IP blocked from.

Proxy stuff on Amazon

The only real thing wrong with free proxys are that they are slow. So if you find you need a fast one here are a selection you can purchase on Amazon

Anonymous Surfing

Used Price: $18.99

Proxy Server 2.0

Other Uses For Proxys

Going through a proxy is useful for the following:
  • Accessing MySpace at work or school

  • Bypassing IP bans

  • Voting multiple times on websites that only allow one vote per visitor

  • Using Internet Related Chat programs like MIRC and ICQ

Wow, who would have guessed?! Is there no limit to what you can do with a computer?

I'm curious though...does that effect things like home wireless networks?

A Deeper Explanation of Proxys

For those that are concerned that proxying might effect home networks, the response is no it won't. When you access the internet any site you visit can see your IP address (basically the IP address is your computers unique address and if you are using lan it is just like your home address, it does not change). Now internet sites are stupid they can only see the IP address of where the connection comes from. When you use a proxy you connect to the proxy site, then the proxy site connects to the internet site you were trying to connect to. So the internet site you are connecting to thinks it is the proxy site that is connecting to it, it can't see deeper than that.
