Counting Down During Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a celebration of the re-dedication of the Holy Temple. In the mid-second century B.C.E., after much conflict with their Greek rulers, the Jews reclaimed their destroyed Temple and religious freedoms. The Temple was restored and cleansed. It was then to be re-dedicated and the Menorah of the Temple was to be re-lit. Only one small jar of oil with the seal of the High Priest was found. The small jar of oil would have only lasted for a single day but it burned for eight . This gave enough time to find additional oil to keep the Menorah lit.

The Menorah of the Holy Temple held seven candles. However, the Hanukkah Menorah has eight candles representing the eight day miracle. There is also a ninth candle that sits higher then the rest. This candle is the servant candle used to light the eight symbolic candles. On each night of Hanukkah, the Hanukkah Menorah is lit. One candle the first night, two the second and so on, counting down until the eighth night, when all eight candles are lit.

It's Game Time

The Dreidel

One Hanukkah tradition is the dreidel. A dreidel is a four-sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side. Each player brings or receives game pieces. These are often coins or candy and all players place a fixed amount into a kitty. Taking turns, each player spins the dreidel and acts accordingly to what letter is shown. The four actions of the game are, do nothing, win all from the kitty, take half of the kitty or place another game piece into the kitty. When the kitty is empty the first round is over. This is repeated until everyone runs out of game pieces.

Designed to be admired, our Dreidel is made of our signature metal, and engraved with the Hebrew letters nun, gimmel, hay and shin to symbolize the phrase, "A great miracle happened there. This refers to a remarkable occurrence during the reclaiming of the ancient Temple Jerusalem, when a single day's supply of Temple's oil burned for eight days. Traditionally, during Hanukkah, children have played a game of chance with the toy and small coins or candles. Each of the letters of the dreidel signifies a gain or loss. When not admiring the dreidel, rest it back in its wood stand.
