Saving you money on software
What first got me interested in Open Source software was the movie Antitrust. I was new to the whole programming thing and was taking a beginner c class in high school. While I am still not that involved in programing I still like to see what has been made available by those out there that are doing what they can to make software more readily available to everyone and while I don't have a problem with people trying to make money off of the programs they make, I strongly applaud those that make everything available to the public and to other programmers to make modifications to and make even more improvements to.

Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.
The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits of open source and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open-source community.
One of our most important activities is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open-source cooperation.

You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.
Their software also don't need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes the software very small and efficient.
