How To Customize Your Wedding Invitations

No matter how traditional or modern you get, personalized bridal invitations are a great way to express a couple's personality. They serve to set the style and tone of your wedding and as such, your wedding and invitations should complement one another.

Some couples believe a unique wedding invitation means personalizing it to an extreme-so much that ends up being tacky. We have outlined more appropriate elements to consider when creating a stylish, customized design that is a reflection of you as well as your wedding's theme and the season of your event.

Color

Creating customized bridal invitations starts with choosing the color that compliments your personality. Color is among the best ways to represent the season of your wedding. While shades of blue may serve to set the tone of a cool winter wedding, browns and yellows will complement autumn ceremonies. Couples find greens and pastels favorite shades of spring and bright oranges and deep reds sizzle with a hot summer ceremony.

Adding the right color to your lettering, card stock, borders, envelopes or ribbon enable you to customize your wedding invitations with style. Just as paper and fonts are the most basic ways to use your chosen colors, accent pieces such as borders and ribbons more effectively incorporate color.

A colored border, for example, offers a subtle way to draw the reader's eye directly to the text. A ribbon could also add a touch of appropriate color to your invitation, especially if the ribbon mirrored the stitching in the bridesmaids' dresses.

Embellishments

In addition to color, design embellishments can add your own personal touches to your invitation. Couples use wax seals, glitter, charms and more to customize their invitations. Some decide to press silk flowers or other dcor under an overlay placed on the outside of the invitation. A fall leaf would be a perfect accent for fall while a flower pedal would work well for spring.

An image or piece of artwork that has a personal meaning would also add a special personal touch to your invitation. A drawing or photograph of the first place you met, for example, would work well, especially if it was at a nice outdoor garden or romantic city setting. Some couples commission a romantic drawing of themselves to use as an overlay for the invitations. Others choose an image of their wedding location. This is especially appropriate if the wedding is to be held somewhere with a beautiful mountain landscape, a sunny seaside setting or other memorable location.

Wording and Text

The words you choose should complement the design of your invitation. Poems are a wonderful way to reflect the love you share with your soon-to-be spouse. But remember, a Dr. Seuss-style limerick might be a bit tacky. A short romantic verse or quote might be a much simpler way to complement the style of your wedding. The important thing is that the words truly represent the love you and your partner share together.

To print these carefully chosen words into your invitation, you can use a variety of fonts. Calligraphy, Old English and Roman provide unique ways for you to personalize your invitation according to your tastes or your theme. For example, while Old English may set the style for a Renaissance-style wedding, Calligraphy offers an element of formality or tradition to the invitation.

Paper

The paper used to print your invitation is another way to create customized invitations that stand out. While many couples concentrate on the card stock and color, the paper's texture and shape can more adequately serve to symbolize your wedding's theme.

Paper with a grit-like texture, for example, may help to represent a beach-wedding theme. Invitations cut in the shape of a flower can effectively illustrate a spring or garden wedding theme. Keep in mind that the paper that you choose will significantly affect the price of your wedding invitations.

Combining the right colors, embellishments, words and fonts are all ways to customize your invitations. Using these elements appropriately will enable you to create invitations that stand out, and yet subtly set the tone for your entire wedding.

The Perfect Spring Wedding!

Tips, Themes and Styles for Your Special Day

By Michelle O'Connor
Southern California Weddings

Its spring...tulips are blooming; the temperatures are rising - what a perfect time for a wedding! Traditionally spring is associated with the beginning of new life. Flowers bloom, and the earth awakens from its winter sleep. A beautiful spring wedding might be outdoors, in a garden, with an abundance of fresh flowers.

As the weather begins to warm and gardens begin to bloom, many find lovely settings for their special day amidst the greenery and budding flowers. There are many ways to plan and decorate for an outdoor wedding in springtime, here are a few suggestions, with an eye towards elegance and class:

Props - Make use of formal props such as candelabras and urns and drape containers and tables with vintage linens and lace. Make use of arbors, decorated with more simplistic garden materials as opposed to highly adorning them with greens and garlands, a look that is less popular now.

Centerpieces - Clean looking centerpieces with a single floral theme, for example, pots filled with tulips or urns holding only anemones, are really in for spring.

Color - Vibrant color is also in. Try cool greens mixed with vibrant contrasting colors like deep red, hot pink, and gold. Garden herbs also work well for weddings in spring. You can make potted combinations of rosemary, thyme, and other herbs for green centerpieces that are also great take-home gifts.

Bouquets - Many spring brides are choosing bouquets filled with color - simplistic but daring! Brides can have a bouquet made up of tulips or anemones, both of which are beautiful. Anemones are a Dutch flower with dark black centers and vibrant petals that can come in red, purple, and fuchsia. Lilacs or nosegays comprised of sweet peas, miniature grape hyacinths, and ranunculus are also popular.

Shabby Chic - A trend right now is to mix and match, contemporary with vintage, very much the Shabby Chic look. Dried lavender, tied with dried grasses and affixed to the pews lends a Shabby Chic feel. Dress windowsills with wreaths and candles in colored mason jars. These same decorations can later be used on the reception tables.

Spring Wedding Gowns - Colored wedding dresses are in! Bring in more color to your gown, or wear a dress with a tan or beige or pink hue. Another trend is one of nostalgia. Many brides are selecting gowns that recall a specific decade, while others are opting to wear the gown their mother or grandmother wore.

Candlelight Outdoors - Candles really lend a soft and romantic look. If you want candles to be an integral part of your spring time wedding, get married a bit later in the day, or, have the reception run into the evening and light your candles then. To add a touch of spring to your candles, tie pastel colored organza ribbon in a bow around clear glass votive cups. These can double as guest wedding favors.

Backup Plan - Spring weather can be unpredictable. Be sure to have your Plan B worked out in case of rain, fog or strong winds. An elegant indoor hall nearby can serve as a backup location. Alternatively, you might have an event tent lined up for delivery the morning of the wedding, just in case. Having a backup plan for any outdoor wedding, anytime of the year, is always a wise move.

A wedding in spring can be romantic, elegant, and fun! Knowing what you want, coupled with great planning and event staff are the makings for a successful wedding day.

Wedding Invitations

Things To Consider...

Begin creating your guest list as soon as possible. Ask your parents and the groom's parents for a list of the people they would like to invite. You and your fiance should make your own list. Make certain that all names are spelled correctly and that all addresses are current. Determine if you wish to include children; if so, add their names to your list. All children over the age of 16 should receive their own invitation.

Order your invitations at least 4 months before the wedding. Allow an additional month for engraved invitations. Invitations are traditionally issued by the bride's parents; but if the groom's parents are assuming some of the wedding expenses, the invitations should be in their names also. Mail all invitations at the same time.

Options: There are three types of invitations: traditional/formal, contemporary, and informal. The traditional/formal wedding invitation is white, soft cream, or ivory with raised black lettering. The printing is done on the top page of a double sheet of thick quality paper; the inside is left blank. The contemporary invitation is typically an individualized presentation that makes a statement about the bride and groom. Informal invitations are often printed on the front of a single, heavyweight card and may be handwritten or preprinted.

There are three types of printing: engraved, thermography, and offset printing. Engraving is the most expensive, traditional and formal type of printing. It also takes the longest to complete. In engraved printing, stationery is pressed onto a copper plate, which makes the letters rise slightly from the page. Thermography is a process that fuses powder and ink to create a raised letter. This takes less time than engraving and is less expensive because copper plates do not have to be engraved. Offset printing, the least expensive, is the quickest to produce and offers a variety of styles and colors. It is also the least formal.

Things To Consider: If all your guests are to be invited to both the ceremony and the reception, a combined invitation may be sent without separate enclosure cards. Order one invitation for each married or cohabiting couple that you plan to invite. The officiant and his/her spouse as well as your attendants should receive an invitation. Order approximately 20% more stationery than your actual count. Allow a minimum of two weeks to address and mail the invitations, longer if using a calligrapher or if your guest list is very large. You may also want to consider ordering invitations to the rehearsal dinner, as these should be in the same style as the wedding invitation.

Tips To Save Money: Thermography looks like engraving and is one-third the cost. Choose paper stock that is reasonable and yet achieves your overall look. Select invitations that can be mailed using just one stamp. Order at least 25 extra invitations, just in case you add people to your list or you mess some up. To reorder this small number of invitations later would cost nearly three times the amount you'll spend up front.

Mailing Those Invitations...

The general rule that most people should follow is to get Wedding invitations mailed out 6 to 8 weeks before the big event. This will give all of your out of town guests time to schedule and save on flights, take vacation time and truly get excited about your event. If your event falls on or near a holiday, it's best to give them as much notice as you can.

Here are some helpful links to Post Offices when it comes time to mail those Wedding invitations.

Bridal Invitations and What Else?

Obviously the main ingredient in a wedding invitation is the invitation itself. But what else do you need to include? With constantly evolving traditions and modern twists to the wedding, there are plenty of variations to wedding invitations. All of the information within them serves as the first form of communication between you and your guests, like the save the date invitations.

We have put together this list of bridal invitation tips to let you know what to include with your wedding invitations.

Reception Cards

Many modern couples hold the wedding ceremony and the reception in different locations. While the wedding information contains details about the ceremony event, the reception card specifies the location and time of the reception celebration.

Couples also use wedding reception cards when the guest list for the wedding ceremony is somewhat different than the guest list for the reception. Some couples choose to have a small private ceremony and a larger reception. Others do the opposite, choosing instead to share their ceremony with a large group and the reception with only a few guests.

The reception card is placed in the envelope on top of the invitation. Traditionally, a piece of tissue paper separates the two.

Wedding Response Cards

As we stated before, the invitations enable you to communicate with the invited guests. The wedding response cards allow the guests to communicate back with you. On these cards, guests tell whether or not they will be attending, how many will be attending and what their meal choice will be at the reception.

The response card is placed atop the reception card. It must include a response date and a stamped return envelope with your address pre-printed on the front.

Directions and Maps

It is essential to include directions or a map with your invitation as not all of your guests will know the area, especially if you are having out-of-town guests. These inserts should not be photocopies. They should be printed in the same style as the rest of your invitations.

If you are writing directions or developing a map, make sure you check and double check your facts before having them printed.

Accommodation Cards

Accommodation cards are important to destination weddings or for local weddings with many out-of-town guests.

Accommodation cards can include detailed travel information for your guests., including nearby airports, hotel options, area attractions and rental car agencies. If you have booked a certain number of suites in a particular hotel or you have reserved rental cars in their names, you would provide this information on the accommodation card.

Web Sites

Finally, many couples host websites where guests go to find information about the wedding. A simple card that provides the web address could be included within the invitations.

The site could allow guests to RSVP for the wedding, give them details about the rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception and provide directions, hotel accommodations and rental card information.

Including reception cards, response cards, directions and maps, accommodation cards and web site information with your invitations offers you the most appropriate way to kick off your wedding and ensure all of the right information is communicated to your guests.

Beautiful lens! I love all the great wedding stationery designs you posted here.....VERY INSPIRING!! I have some wedding invitation items in my lens(it's a zazzle showcase lens, just joined Squidoo yesterday), and would love to make a lens that is all about wedding invitations! I really enjoyed my time here!!
