This is especially true in underprivileged areas where most kids don't have ebook readers and MP3 players, and "free downloads" are thus an impossibility. Ebooks can be read on pretty much anything with a screen nowadays - ManyBooks even allows downloads as iPod Notes which can be read on non-Touch iPods. The Kindle is designed for nothing but the reading of ebooks, though, and this gives it some advantages, such as a bigger screen (without the bulkiness of a full computer) and an e-ink screen, which uses less battery than reading a book on most other products and doesn't strain the eyes as much as a backlit screen. Its wireless capabilities also allow you to get new books whenever you want.
