FAQ's

Do I need a storage unit?

There are various situations when you would feel the need for a storage unit. For instance, when you relocate, rent your apartment; park your car, RV, sports vehicle or boat to protect it from extreme weather conditions, go on a holiday, live in an area that is prone to theft and so on. Self-storage units are useful in many situations.

What are the types of storage units?

Storage units are of different types. For instance, there are climate-controlled units, drive up units, roll up door units, parking units, and regular units. Each type of unit has unique features. A climate-controlled unit will ensure that a certain temperature level is maintained at all times. This type of unit is ideal for storing paper, handicraft or other fragile items that can get damaged due to extreme weather conditions. In fact, these days, there are even units available for storing wine. Drive-up units are those where you can drive right up to the unit and load/unload your goods. The other variant to self-storage units is roll up door units. These doors roll up and allow for easy movement of goods. They are ideal for huge and heavy items. Some parking units are so large that they can even accommodate a vessel, apart from the regular cars and bikes.

Are the goods insured?

This would depend on the company you choose. Not all the self-storage units offer insurance. Check with them before hiring the unit. It is not a good idea to keep your belongings uninsured. Moreover, when you take an insurance policy it is advisable to take a single policy for all the goods stored in the unit. Do not take separate policies as that will turn out to be expensive. Another thing to bear in mind is that, you have to update your insurance provider every time you add or remove items from the unit.

Are there any hidden costs?

Very few self-storage companies are transparent in their communication regarding fees and other charges. Not everyone will disclose costs like, security deposit or other administration fees. If you don't want any unpleasant surprises later, ask for the fee structure before you sign the dotted line.

How do I know if the storage unit is safe and secured?

Check if the security measures are up to the mark. You have to keep your eyes open when you visit a self-storage unit. For instance, the storage unit should have different types of alarms like, fire alarm, smoke alarm, theft alarm etc. It should be guarded with armed security guards and CCTV cameras. The unit should maintain an entry and exit register. Unit owners should be authorized with cards for accessing their units. These features would ascertain that the security measures are in place.
