GANGS OF HAITI

"Haiti Gangs, tools of the rich and powerful."
The news on the Haiti Earth Quake make the gang problem in Haiti sound like nuisance looters creating havoc in Port-au-Prince, but what they don't tell you is how the Hatian gangs nearly threatened the control of Haiti, capturing the second largest city, Cap-Hatien, and how for years the gangs have run Haiti right alongside the politicians.
I have collected a few facts on these so called Gangs/Armed guards for political warfare. Here I simply attempt to show a different perspective than what is shown to us on the daily news.

Notorious gang leaders who dominate the Haitian slum
Now on DVD!
Ghost of Cite Soleil

Plot
In the slum of Cite Soleil, President Aristide's most loyal supporters were ruling as kings. The five major gang leaders were controlling heavily armed young men; the Chimeres. The Secret army of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. "Ghosts of Cite Soleil" is a film about Billy and Haitian 2pac. Two brothers. Gang Leaders of the Chimeres. Written by Asger Leth
"It is simple--this is a story of of gang warfare. There is no truth--there is no right--there is no way out. It will only end when one side is wiped out. I commend the makers of this film on their documentation of the voices of all involved and this film should be viewed by everyone who is concerned about violence that springs up in the midst of poverty. It is not without reason--these people have a need for respect, they have family, they want the same things that every human wants/desires--if you don't care ... what do you expect. This is not only a film about Haiti, but about any environment in the world that faces the extremes that these people face... " -mdbento from Lexington, Kentucky
Gangs of Haiti - A Political Phenomenon

FACT #1
The Gangs of Port-au-Prince were exploited by powerful elites for political warfare.
September 2008 | Special Report by Michael Dziedzic and Robert Perito
FACT #2
For years, street gangs have run Haiti right along side the politicians.
U.N. Troops Fight Haiti Gangs One Street at a Time - By MARC LACEY
Published: February 10, 2007
FACT #3
The United Nations "peacekeepers" were set loose on the gangs by the President, Rene Preval, a risky move that would determine security of the country and the success of his young government.

FACT #4
Haitian Gangs Terrorize Miami
A crime spree spread from Miami to Broward County with gang members posing as police officers or federal agents to gain entry to the houses then robbing them of money and drugs.
"Police say they are all members of 4 gangs: Caribbean Thunder I, II, III, and the Creole Connection."
FACT #5The Haitian gangs threatened the control of Haiti after they captured Cap-Haitien, Haiti's second-largest city in 2004, that drove government forces out of half the country and then proceeded to threaten to march on to the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

Haiti's Gas Gang
January 9, 2009
Port-Au-Prince is Grinding to a HaltHaiti's Gas Gang
By RICHARD MORSE
This article describes a different type of gang, yet even more dangerous than the street gangs. They call these gangs, office gangs, the business elite, the economic monopolies. These so called elite or wealthy gang lords, you decide, brought the economy of Port-au-Prince to a grinding halt by taking over the control of gas. Not allowing anyone to purchase anything but diesel, unless you wanted to by black market gas in gallon containers at double the price.
"If we don't like the prices, no one gets gas."
The biggest problem here was that the UN had only mandate to address street gangs, but not office gangs.
When the population eventually rises up and puts an end to Haiti's archaic economic system, controlled by the Gang of Eleven, controlled by "Friends of the Embassy", people will scream that the poor are unjustly attacking the rich.

How are they surviving?
Mud pies, literally!

BUTTER-FLAVORED
'In Haiti, where three-quarters of the population earns less than $2 a day and one in five children is chronically malnourished, the one business booming amid all the gloom is the selling of patties made of mud, oil and sugar, typically consumed only by the most destitute. "It's salty and it has butter and you don't know you're eating dirt," said Olwich Louis Jeune, 24, who has taken to eating them more often in recent months. "It makes your stomach quiet down."'

- When a government fails to provide an environment that allows for all of its citizens to live a life free from deprivation or shame the people will look outside the system of government for survival.
Basically when you push your whole society into crushing poverty with no hope for escape they turn to violence and crime to survive. The best way to help any one Haitian is to find ways to sustainably increase the quality of life for all Haitians.

- This is a awesome inspiring lens, beautiful!. I think the biggest problem with Haiti is the corruption, billions of dollars have been thrown at it and still nothing has really changed or improved other than the pockets of the corrupt. And that is the problem, the money the world governments give never make it to the little guy and we just keep throwing money at it. You have to find a way to empower the people, without the government involvement. Again, fabulous lens.
