It is a big problem for an already poor country. What a suffering for the common people. Imagine having to eat dirt.

When a government fails to provide an environment that allows for all of its citizens to live a life free from deprivation or shame the people will look outside the system of government for survival.

Basically when you push your whole society into crushing poverty with no hope for escape they turn to violence and crime to survive. The best way to help any one Haitian is to find ways to sustainably increase the quality of life for all Haitians.

This is a awesome inspiring lens, beautiful!. I think the biggest problem with Haiti is the corruption, billions of dollars have been thrown at it and still nothing has really changed or improved other than the pockets of the corrupt. And that is the problem, the money the world governments give never make it to the little guy and we just keep throwing money at it. You have to find a way to empower the people, without the government involvement. Again, fabulous lens.

just keep thinking about the book of Naomi Klein "Disaster Capitalism" when thinking about Haiti. What's done with the millions from people all over the world to help Haiti? Good lens

Pictures sometimes tell a story better than words and you did a wonderful job with this lens. Thanks for sharing this side of Haiti which everyone needs to know. Maybe someone can do the same for America because we all know there is another one than one is portrayed.

It really touched my heart to see the mud-cakes, how sad! This is a country in great need, we have to do what we can to help.

I had a Haitian friend and if I did not know him I would never of known about Haiti. When I watched the news many years ago I wondered if he was in trouble but I don't know how to find him now. Your lens reminded me of him. Thanks!

I want to use this photo for the cover of my next book of poems titled Haitian Mud Pies. What do I have to do to have the rights to use this.
  • newbizmau Feb 28, 2011 @ 10:50 pm | delete
I'm not sure. There are many free stock photos that you can find by searching for them. Usually there are stipulations so be careful to read the terms of use.

Wow... thanks so much for writing on this important topic! So much of this goes unreported, it's a terrible shame and tragedy. Now I really want to watch that documentary!
  • MisterJeremy Oct 28, 2010 @ 7:47 pm | delete
Very interesting read. I had heard about gangs in Haiti but didn't know the extent of their influence.
  • rachsue Oct 14, 2010 @ 11:20 pm | delete
Thank you for providing this information. I had no idea how bad it was there. I am going to make sure I get the documentary. I had no idea about the mud patties. So saddening.
  • lizziebeth Sep 20, 2010 @ 7:10 pm | delete
Wow. I didn't know about the mud pies. This lens makes me want to see the documentary. I hope Haiti can improve its conditions soon.

I visited Port Au Prince as an American tourist on a cruise ship in the early 1980's. It was poor then, but not like this. We saw beggars, some with a hand chopped off for stealing. Most of it was charming shops and beautiful arts and crafts. Corruption was seething under the surface then. I guess it couldn't be held down for long.
How very sad to see anyone living in such conditions.

Just wanted to stop back by and tell you that I recently watched the documentary, Ghosts of Cite Soleil. It was very moving, heart breaking and the corruption that is the soul of the government of Haiti is enraging. Thank you for turning me on to this wonderful film.
  • newbizmau Apr 17, 2010 @ 4:33 pm | delete
I'm glad you got to see the film. Thanks for your wonderful comments.
  • Wordwinder Apr 8, 2010 @ 12:51 am | delete
Our own little worries and discomforts appear utterly inconsequential when you read about such adversity. A great lens that highlights the plight of the people of Haiti.
  • michelle Mar 30, 2010 @ 5:29 pm | delete
does anyone know if there is a soundtrack to ghost of cite soleil? i have the movie and always wanted to buy the music. In a quote by Wyclef it says there is one but I cannot find it anywhere not even on his sak pase record label. Hopefully he kept his promise to the main character, haitian tupac.

Sometimes we think we have got it bad, then we read about places like this. Very informative lens, 5 stars.
  • ShirlW Feb 3, 2010 @ 7:28 am | delete
Very well done. Why do we have to dig below the main stream media to get the real news?
  • lasertek Feb 2, 2010 @ 8:21 pm | delete
Very informative. Been reading a lot of information about Haiti ever since the earthquake struck the place. So far I have read about current news, culture, tradition, and history. This lens gave me something new today. Shocking Haiti information but worth reading. 5*

Thank you for presenting this powerful and eye-opening look into what has been going on in Haiti. How do you rebuild a country when these gangs are in their midst? The people of Haiti need our help, more than ever. *blessed*
  • prosperity66 Jan 25, 2010 @ 8:25 am | delete
Gangs are something we all have to get rid of... definitely, both in Haïti AND everywhere else in the world!
    Blessed by a SquidAngel.

Well, it turns out I'll be lensrolling this one to mine. I'll feature it as well.

Forgive me for being unable to attempt watching the video; viewer discretion means "Norma, beware." I may attempt it at a later date but, for now, the photos will suffice. They tell a story in itself - albeit, a sad and tragic story.

Incredible potrayal of the real conditions and underlying reasons. The photographs are heartbreaking. I have nominated this lens for LOTD . Excellent work.

Its overwhelming what is going on in this tiny country and how corruption and gangs always get on top to cause havoc. I am adding this to my lens on Haiti as a feature. Well done and great pics.

Thanks so much for featuring my lens and your kind words. Still hoping for Lotd.
