Geographic Information Systems and Mapping

GIS Maps

Geographic Information Systems have come a long way from just being a tool for creating maps. Ths technology has really come far in a relatively short amount of time. Now, we use GIS for GPS (global positioning systems) technology that now come as standard in many new cars and as well on your cell phones. These are just two of the more obvious uses.

Once only used to map out physical land features, the uses for GIS have expanded to encompass such areas as urban planning, architecture and agriculture. There are so many social and economic uses that I will not even attempt to try to list. For those who are unfamiliar with GIS, I hope this lens will help you to see what an enormous part the GIS tool plays in our daily lives and in the well-being of our planet.

This reminds me of Geography at school and though I enjoyed memorizing country and city names, what I really liked was mapping.
  • LaurenIM Dec 23, 2011 @ 11:12 am | delete
Cool that you had experience mapping too! I wasn't that in to memorizing all the names though lol!

To autofil111, I know, we've come a long way huh?! We now have FUN Educational Games and the Geochron. Who knew that watching the time change as the sun moves across the Earth could be so fascinating to watch!

It's amazing how the technology has developed; when I was a kid, many people didn't even have a home phone, they had to go to neighbors to that had. When you first start to use GIS equipment, being without it is no option anymore.
