How to Crack GMAT

Simplify your GMAT Prep

So you have tried a lot of books, looked online but your score seems to have stalled. Here are a few tricks that will help you get your scores moving.
1. Stop collecting too many GMAT books and material: The more material / books you collect the more confused you will become. No Standardized test (GMAT included) is about quantity. Your preparation should be about quality - How do you improve the quality of your prep?

2. Test Material : Start looking beyond bookish concepts. If the books contained everything, then everyone would be scoring high on GMAT. GMAT does not test very advanced concepts, however it asks simpler concepts in "tricky" "non-traditional" way. The 700+ level problems are based on these tricks and traps. The more you are aware of these gmat tricks and gmat traps, the better you are going to be on the GMAT test.

3. Solving methodologies: GMAT is a timed test. On an average you cannot spend more than 2 minutes on any particular question. What happens when you are stuck at a question? Should you guess and move? Are there techniques which will help you to make an educated guess and move on. Yes! you must learn and practice these techniques.

4. Practice questions: Internet is full of GMAT practice questions. You will find many contradicting solutions to these practice questions, some indicating A as answer, some indicating B as answer => The questions are poorly written. If you try to look for answers to these questions => You will be wasting your time and energy. So look for well formatted practice questions where the confusion doesnt exist.

So where do you find all of these? ScoreChase offers GMAT Crash Courses and Workshops which can help you achieve the above objectives. The courses do not confuse you by providing myriads of study material, but lets you focus on important concepts, techniques and study material.

Scored 770, Admitted to Darden (Top 15)

I re-took my GMAT yesterday and scored 770(51,42). I would like to thanks Hagrid for all the support. For any kind of help just PM Hagrid and believe me you'll get the best possible solution and all the possible help!! Thanks Hagrid!! you simply rock!!I took Gold Seeker's membership around 10 days back but got an excellent idea about the pattern of the questions by practicing both the VGs and MGs. I would suggest one MUST solve all the questions before taking his/her real GMAT.

Well, I would also like to share my experiences I had through my MBA journey, which started last June when I took the GMAT for the 1st time and scored 700(51,32). I was very disappointed with my score as I was not able to perform to my best abilities because of some mishappening at the test center. I was in a dilemma then whether to re-take GMAT, but after discussing with my friends decided not to do so.......To read more:

Cracked 750 - Learn from the best!

Wrote the GMAT for the first time on Mar 22 2007 and scored 750 [M49, V42].

Preparation
I prepared for 5.5 weeks, starting Feb 12 and spent an average of 20hrs/week. For the first week, I read OG11, Kaplan 800, Princeton Guide to get familiar with the test structure and content and practiced questions from these books. These helped me get a good idea of the content and helped me brush up on math and verbal concepts.

After the first week, it was mainly timed practice in the form of Princeton and some Kaplan practice tests, timed content from the Kaplan CD or just timed practice from questions in OG10 and OG11. I tried my best to make sure all my practice was timed, then analyzing my mistakes and strengths from evaluating my results.

I was scoring in the 600 - 680 range in my first 4 tests. The big mistake I realized then was that I was spending far too much time on a few tough problems. As a result I was rushed for time could not spend adequate time on the ones that I could otherwise solve correctly. As a professional trader, one of the principles we live by is "cut your losses and let your winners run". I found that a similar principle applies to success in the GMAT. It is much tougher to implement this in practice than it is in theory as psychologically it is hard to admit defeat to a tough question. Once I recognized this in the GMAT, it made a world of a difference to my scores in the practice tests. I began to choose the best alternative after 2.5 - 3 minutes even if I was close to a solution and moved on to the next question. Subsequently, I was scoring above 700.

During my preparations, I came across the beatthegmat forums and through that site found out about the Manhattan GMAT series of books and online content. I purchased a couple of the books and got access to MGMAT's online practice tests. I would recommend the MGMAT stuff highly. They really helped strengthen and clear up my concepts. I found the Number Properties and Equations books especially useful.

Ten Steps to Score 700

GMAT Preparation isnt as easy as it sounds. Here are 10 steps to fulfill your ambition at the convenience of your home and at exceptionally affordable price.

Let us first understand what does GMAT preparation actually consist of?

- 40% Concepts in Math and Verbal
- 60% Practice in Math and Verbal
Concepts themselves consist of 30% theory and 70 %practice. So a major chunk of GMAT score relies on good practice and ofcourse some on concept building.

There are unending resources on the web which will confuse you on what to read and what to follow for excellent GMAT score. I have a perfect system, and I know its correct because I just scored 760 with this approach: The GMAT FORUM way. Here is how to prepare:

1] Join a GMAT forum : www.scorechase.com [Its free] . Available 24×7, all u need is internet and start GMAT TING [from home, coffeshop %u2026office anywhere].

2] Read about other's GMAT Experience and understand their strategy

3] Explore the website [navigation link on the left] to find all the areas of the website. Dont miss out on anything.

4] Scorechase provides GMAT standard questions [Math Gems and Verbal Gems] for practice in its GMAT Gold Seekers membership. Its really GOLD. ORDER for atleast 2 months of membership. These questions are written and solved by real GMAT experts [760+ scorers]

[Take the membership around the mid of the month so you will have more questions to practice]. Imagine how amazing it would be when you see a familiar concept in GMAT! - Take that GMAT!!

5] Post whatever you feel must be the correct answer. If someone finds a fault in your approach, that is one less fault you have to worry about in the real GMAT exam. If you are right, it helps your confidence, do a little victory dance.

6] Seek help and advice, the tutors on Scorechase are always very helpful and also provide some personal counseling for preparation.

7] Scorechase also provides Private Tutoring at very affordable rates. If you need extra help take private tutoring in verbal or math. Pay only for the subject you need help on.

8] Always take a test date before you start to prepare, gives you an ambition and a perspective on how to pace yourself. You can postpone later.

9] Give enough time for applications after you take your GMAT. Essays are very important part of the admission process, take them seriously

10] Enjoy your preparation!
