About Gaithersburg, MD

Gaithersburg is the 4th largest city in the state of Maryland, based on population. Gaithersburg is located in Montgomery County, just south of Germantown, and just north of Rockville.

Pictured is the area referred to as "Rio", where you can find a movie theater, many new restaurants, shops, and some newly built corporate offices and hotels.

History of Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg, originally dubbed Log Town in 1765. It wasn't but a few years before the settlement was renamed, Gaithersburg.

The local post office was named Forest Oak, now the name of a middle school located in Gaithersburg, MD. It wasn't until a railroad station was built in what is now known as Old Town, that Gaitherburg really started to see some growth, in 1873.

About 5 years later, the City of Gaithersburg incorporated.

Attractions and Things to Do in Gaithersburg

These are listed in no particular order. I'm sure I've left some things out, if you have any suggestions, let me know in the guestbook below!

Rio - Rio is located around one of the larger man made lakes in Gaithersburg. Rio is particularly favorable for family outings as well as tame night life for the young and single. There is a movie theater, plenty of restaurants, and good shopping.

Lakeforest Mall - I have to admit, it isn't the nicest mall, when compared to other malls in the area such as Montgomery Mall. But if you're looking to kill some time, Lakeforest does the job.

Old Town Gaithersburg - Old town Gaithersburg is relatively small, but they do have some top quality restaurants and bars.

Kentlands - Kentlands is a new urban community packed with tons of restaurants, bars, and shops, all within walking distance. It is a very family oriented area, but you can find something to do for just about anyone.
