People love to tell about their home towns, bragging rights, etc. What makes your home town great?  More than 222,650 people live in Garland, making it the 10th largest city in Texas, and the 83rd largest in the United States.

While not the Mecca of the celebrity world, Garland has brought forth a few names that would be picked up on in if mentioned in certain circles.  Country singer LeAnn Rhimes, once a Garland resident, has performed at the Garland Opry (See link below), who's stage also saw the Dixie Chicks before their rise to stardom. NBA great Mookie Blaylock is an alumnus of Garland High School while nearby Richardson High was attended by one time Garland resident Ashlee Simpson.

Perhaps Garland's most celebrated recognition comes as the alleged model of Arlen, home to Hank Hill and friends. King of the Hill creator Mike Judge was also a one time Garland resident and every time I watch that show I'm certain I see a character fashioned after someone I know in this town.

Perhaps we can generate a large assortment of hometown virtual travel destinations. Linking together each that we find interesting.

A brief History of Garland

From the Handbook of Texas Online

You can find out about a lot of Texas Towns in this great resource. Some existing and some from days gone by, there is a lot of history in Texas towns and cities.

Garland was named for President Grover Cleveland's attorney general, Augustus H. Garland, in 1887, when a new post office was established between the two communities of Duck Creek and Embree Duck Creek was a station on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, and Embree was a station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. They had fought over the post office for several years, but in 1887 Congressman Joseph Abbott solved the problem by submitting a bill to Congress to move the post office to a place between the two towns; the new site was called Garland.

Not that we have werewolves or anything. At least none that I know of. There have been a couple of coyotes spotted around our place though.

After being held downtown, on and around the square and Arts Center the multi award winning festival will still be held over three days but in 3 S-E-P-A-R-A-T-E Locations! No carnival rides and only one fire works show are the other changes.

Attendance was down slightly and reactions were mixed to the new format but generally most everyone surveyed found some aspect they really enjoyed and the overall reception was positive. Click on the title to learn more about this nationally recognized event including information on the F-R-E-E Concert at the new Firewheel Towne Center (The highlight of the festival and quite possibly the best location in 5 years.) 2006 Blake Shelton; 2007 SHeDaisy
Garland Arts in Action
It's not all country music in Garland. The north side of downtown has seen it's once small little civic center emerge into a multi-stage and multiple bilding Fine Arts complex.

My Home Town

Dallas' Biggest Suburb But Still a Small Town Feel

My wife and I have lived in Garland since our marriage in 1979.
So Where is this Garland Tx. USA? The center of downtown Garland is approxinately 15 miles northeast of downtown Dallas as the crow flies. My home is almost exactly 5 miles due north of that.

Great pics and bits on my birthplace. Born in Cleveland Memeorial Hospital in 1954 I'm slightly...OK, much, older than the Cleveland Lensmaster Julianne Gentile. (How wierd is this? The first two towns I put in the Hook-up have a Julieanne and a Julianne for a Lens Masters). I spent the first decade of my life just to the east in Euclid, OH.
