About Gavin Lyall's flight books

Gavin Lyall was a thriller author. Among his works were four books which have been grouped together as his flight books. Drawing on his experience in the RAF and as an aviation reporter, the books delve into the shady side of aviation (or more literally "The Wrong side of the Sky") including civil wars, treasure hunts and smuggling.

As a description of flying, some of these are the closest you can get with your feet still on the ground! As well as his flight thrillers, Gavin Lyall wrote a number of of series, including spy fiction and the Major Harry Maxim books.

The books were written over a fifteen year period.

1961 The Wrong side of the Sky
1963 The Most Dangerous Game
1966 Shooting Script
1975 Judas Country

Other books he wrote durting this period were more standard thrillers, focusing the action on the ground rather than in the air.

These four books have several characteristics in common:
- First person narrative,
- a hero who is a pilot and usually ex-military,
- a focus on the aircraft involved.

The plot usually revolves around flying and aviation where the pilot has been recruited (or is being recruited) for his skills. However, the descriptions of flying are excellent obserbed, and the aircraft have as much character as the people.

I really loved these books growing up, and thought I'd pull them together into a set of lenses.
