Gay & Katie Hendricks; Teachers of Love & Spiritual Awakening

I believe that surrendering to and trusting in Love is the key to all wellbeing. Gay and Katie Hendricks have been teaching about love for more than 20 years. I have a lot of respect for what they do. Everything in life comes down to relationships, from how we relate to ourselves, to family, friends, business, and of course our intimate partner. Katie and Gay work with people on a foundational level so that all their relationships improve.

Let's face it, the biggest challenge in life for most people is relationships. That's also where we have the greatest opportunities to grow. All the people in our lives reflect back to us aspects of ourselves. What we don't like in others, as well as what we admire, is showing us who we are and how we're showing up in the world.

If you're struggling with any of your relationships, Dr.s Gay and Katie Hendricks propbably have just the insight you need.

If you want to improve your relationship with your self, you're in the right place.

In Their Own Words

What The Dr.s Hendricks are all About

What are the Hendricks' all about? Well, let's see what they say about that.

The Hendricks Institute

"Thank you for your interest in our path to relationship harmony and bodymind vibrance. The tools and principles we teach reliably produce specific results:

We know this first hand, because ever since we met and fell in love more than 25 years ago, our work has grown out of creating a thriving, conscious relationship with each other. We only teach principles and practices that have made a profound, positive difference in our own lives.
We're deeply grateful for the love, wellbeing & creative energy these tools have brought us. May your use of them bring you as much love and vibrance as we've enjoyed.

With love,
Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks

The Mission
We are an International Learning Center that teaches core skills for conscious living. Our work over the past three decades has been to assist people in opening to more creativity, love, and vitality -- through the power of conscious relationship and whole-person learning.
We are passionately committed to creating a worldwide community of people with whom we can explore new heights of love, creativity, and well-being.

We envision:

A world in which all of us live in harmony of mind, body and spirit. Aligned inside ouselves, we live our lives in expanding waves of creativity and integrity.
A world in which all of our relatnioships honor the essence of ourselves and others, and where all our interactions are conducted with honesty and integrity.
A world in which all of us live in harmony with our organic spiritual natures, and where the honoring of that spiritual nature forms the basis for community and society."

I owe that to My Relationships

What have Gay and Katie Hendricks Discovered?

The Discoveries

The First Principle
Relationships thrive when each partner commits to total union with the other person and total creative expression as an individual.

The First Magic Move
Make a heartfelt commitment to the other person that you're willing to go beyond all your ego-defenses to fully initiate unity. At the same time, make a commitment to going all the way with your creative expression. Then observe the emergence of your defensive barriers every day. Report them honestly, but don't take them seriously. In fact, ego defenses disappear quickly when you turn them into play.

The Second Principle
Relationships thrive when each partner learns from every relationship interaction, especially the stressful ones, instead of running programmed defensive moves. Some popular defensive moves: criticizing, listening-filters, lying, sulking in silence, making noisy uproars, numbing out with food, drink, smoke, TV and other habit-forming drugs.

The Second Magic Move
Make a heartfelt commitment to learning something new from every relationship interaction. Notice your defensive moves as they emerge, and gradually transplant wondering and truth-speaking in place of defensiveness.

The Third Principle
Relationships thrive in a climate of absolute honesty - no hidden feelings or withheld truths. All feelings - anger, sadness, joy, fear, sexual attraction - are okay to discuss with the other person, and each person is able to listen, free of listening-filters such as listening-to-find-fault and listening-to-fix.

The Third Magic Move
Notice your feelings and thoughts, and speak about them to your partner. If there are things you've done or feelings you're afraid to talk about, make sure to speak about those to your partner. Get familiar with your habitual listening-filters, and practice summarizing what the other person is saying, with no distortion, an acknowledging the feelings embedded in communication.

The Fourth Principle
Relationships thrive when people keep their agreements impeccably. It doesn't matter whether an agreement seems trivial ("Sorry, honey, but I forgot to take the trash out.") or significant ("Sorry, honey, but I slept with your twin sister and the maid of honor the night before our wedding.") There is no such thing as a minor lapse of integrity, according to Tom Peters, and our experience has confirmed this radical notion.

The Fourth Magic Move
Monitor each agreement you make very carefully, making sure you want to make it in the first place. Once you make an agreement, fulfill it impeccably or change it consciously by communicating with the relevant person.

The Fifth Principle
People thrive in a climate of 100% accountability, where nobody blames or claims victim status. 100% accountability is the shift from "I was wronged" to "I take full responsibility for events occurring the way they did." From this empowered position, problems can be solved quickly, because time and energy are not squandered in a fruitless attempt to find fault.

The Fifth Magic Move
In any situation, claim responsibility for having created it the way it occurred. Wonder about how and why you might have wanted it to occur that way. Speak in empowered language rather than victim language ("I choose to go to the dentist" rather than "I have to go to the dentist." "I take responsibility for eating so that I have a healthy body," rather than "Why did you buy that huge bucket of buttered popcorn? You know I can't resist it.")

The Sixth Principle
Relationships flourish when partners appreciate each other liberally. People grow more beautiful through our appreciation of them. Relationships take a quantum leap when each partner practices appreciation of the other person as a daily art form.

The Sixth Magic Move
Invent new ways to appreciate the other person every day, and speak appreciations frequently. Live inside questions such as, "What is my partner's true essence and how can I invite it forth?" And "What could I appreciate about my partner at this moment?"

The Seventh Principle
Everything can be resolved with willingness and love. Love is the ultimate healer and liberator, because only love is vast enough to embrace its opposite. In other words, you can love yourself even when you hate yourself, and the hate will melt in the larger presence off love. Whatever emerges in a close relationship is the next thing that needs to be loved.

The Seventh Magic Move
Love as much as you can from wherever you are.

Life CAN be Joyful!

Wikipedia Says:

Gay Hendricks (1945-) is a psychologist, writer and practitioner in the field of personal growth, relationships, and the mind body connection. He is best known for his work in relationship enhancement and in the development of conscious breathing exercises, which proponents believe increase awareness, energy levels, and relaxation. He was born in Leesburg, Florida in 1945.
As a young child, Hendricks states he was able to see the auras of people around him. However, as he grew older, this ability went away. Due to a thyroid problem he spent the first 25 years of his life obese. Now at a normal weight, he considers obesity to be the best thing to ever happen to him, teaching him lessons on compassion and awareness he might have otherwise never learned. Intent on becoming a successful writer, he decided to major in English as he began college. Later, at the age of 24 and in a time of great personal turmoil, he slipped on ice, violently knocking his head on the ground. This experience had a dramatic effect on him, revealing a spiritual dimension of life he had not known existed; he claimed to see auras once again, and also decided to transfer to counseling from English. At the time of the slip on the ice, he weighed 320 pounds, had poor vision and smoked heavily. After the slip, he made a commitment to find his own spiritual path in life; within a year he had lost 100 pounds, quit smoking and made many other positive changes. Ultimately his vision even changed to the degree that he no longer needed to wear glasses.

After receiving his Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University in 1974, Gay began teaching at the University of Colorado. He spent 20 years at the University of Colorado before moving on to found The Hendricks Institute.

He now conducts workshops on various mind and body topics with his wife of more than 25 years, Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks. Together they have authored over 25 books on personal growth topics. Gay and Kathlyn have appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including Oprah where their work was first introduced to a wide audience.

Around the turn of the century, he developed an interest in writing and producing movies with inspirational content. He and veteran producer, Stephen Simon, founded The Spiritual Cinema Circle, which delivers inspirational movies on DVD to subscribers in more than 80 countries. He also served as producer and writer on the Louise Hay movie, You Can Heal Your Life.

Love Blooms Abundantly, When We're Open

Introduction to the Spiritual Cinema Circle

Movies for Your Soul

Spiritual Cinema Circle

Here's an insider movie industry secret you may not be aware of: Many of the most visionary, inspiring movies made each year are never even released, so you never get a chance to see them.
Why? Because most mainstream Hollywood distributors simply don't believe there's an audience for these kinds of movies. Sure, occasionally a film like Whale Rider or What The Bleep breaks through, but for every one of these there are dozens of others that would touch you just as deeply... if only you could find a way to see them.
Now you can. As an exclusive member of Spiritual Cinema Circle, you'll receive entertaining, soulful movies that will...
-Awaken your sense of joy and wonder!
-Inspire love and compassion!
-Evoke a deeper sense of connection with the universe around you!
P.S. When you join Spiritual Cinema Circle you will be making an important contribution to your world. By joining The Circle, you will bring inspiring and enlightening entertainment into your own life while positively influencing the lives of others.
Through your support, you are encouraging talented, visionary filmmakers to continue in their efforts to add life and meaning to our movies. For years now, these filmmakers have been over looked by mainstream distributors looking for big profits. As a result we have all experienced the spread of movies that glorify violence and foster negative stereotypes in our culture's mindset, ultimately leading to a general emotional and spiritual numbness.

A Taste of What They Write

Here are some important points from the Hendricks' work. They can give you a little idea of what you might get out of their books, classes, and seminars. I always like to check a teacher out, see a little of their work, before I commit to any full instruction.

From "The Conscious Heart":
"Conscious Creating Abundance: Dealing with Money Issues":
" In summary, I can see three main transformations which have generated financial abundance in my life:

1. Realizing that I could choose conscious my own relationship to money. This step involved confronting my programming and replacing it with ideas more congenial to my own values. When Kathlyn and I chose to quit fighting about money and re-channel that energy into productivity, our prosperity began to increase rapidly.

2. Clearing up incompletions from the past. This step involved much soul-searching and looking for places where we has broken agreements or had left something unsaid. The actions steps-completing whatever needed to be completed-always brought a fresh burst of life-energy and a new wave of abundance.

3. Becoming a conscious philanthropist. This step is an ongoing practice of sending money out into the world with the intention of creating harmony while prospering all concerned, including ourselves."

I think this shows how important it is to be conscious not only of our feelings, but also our intentions. We don't live in a vacuum. Everything we put out into the world affects others, and returns to us in kind.

A Mission Statement

Guiding Principles Of Our Work

Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D. & Gay Hendricks, Ph.D.

1. Einstein said that you cannot solve a problem in the same state of consciousness--or with the same type of thinking--which created the problem. For this reason, our trainings contain many experiential activities designed to shift you out of the state of consciousness in which problems occur, and put you into a state of consciousness in which those problems can resolve effortlessly. Our work assists you in shifting from seeing through the "eyes of the mind" to experiencing life through the eyes of the heart. When this shift occurs, previously intractable problems often resolve quickly and with ease.
2. We take a spiritual approach, grounded in what we call organic spirituality. Our training is designed to produce spiritual shifts which are felt in the body, and which do not depend on changing your beliefs or intellectual understanding. In other words, four people--an agnostic, a Buddhist, a Christian and a Jew--might feel a heart-centered awakening of love and compassion, even though each of them came to the training and left with differing cosmological beliefs. We are not so much interested in beliefs as we are in the underlying consciousness out of which all mental Phenomena emerge.
3. Our ideas and practices have been tested in the real world of relationship transformation. We only advocate practices that we have found transformative in our own relationship. and which have been carefully tested on the thousands of partnerships with whom we've been privileged to work.
4. In our thirty-plus years as therapists, educators and consultants, we have never seen dishonesty produce happiness and intimacy. So we advocate absolute honesty in any relationship that matters to you. If your relationship to yourself matters, be scrupulously honest in acknowledging your feelings and motivations to yourself. If your relationship with a specific person matters, scrupulously tell the full truth about your feelings and your deeds to that person. Almost every relationship disaster people have brought to our office began with lying to protect the feelings of another person. For this reason, we never advocate concealment.
5. Commitment is crucial to relationship harmony. Almost all relationship problems are problems of commitment. We have worked with couples married for twenty years in which one or both people had not yet made a full body-and-soul commitment to the relationship. In other situations, problems were caused by a person being more committed to an addiction--such as smoking, alcohol, work or others--than to the ongoing dance of intimacy with a partner. Unconscious commitments can best be discovered by listening to what you complain about, out loud or in your mind. When people complain about something repeatedly, it is almost always because they have an unconscious commitment to it. Take, for example, the common complaint about weight: Most insightful people eventually discover that they were unconsciously committed to perpetuating their weight problems. If they weren't complaining about weight, they'd have to do something with all that energy, something truly risky like expressing creativity. We advocate a monogamous sexual commitment, and have never seen any other model work.
6. Arguments start when someone points the finger of blame and races to occupy the position of "wronged victim." This causes the other person to blame and race toward the victim position. Both people end up feeling wronged, justifying that position, and burning immense energy in a futile attempt to get the other person to accept the role of villain. Our work deals with this problem in a radical way: We invite both people to take full responsibility for any problem in a relationship. Both people are invited to shift to asking "What's my role in this problem?" and "How can I shift my consciousness so it doesn't re-occur?" rather than "Why is he/she doing this to me?" When people are courageous enough to do that, the energy that previously was burned in the race for victimhood can be re-channeled into creative activities.
7. Our work focuses on learning to appreciate other people, and learning to receive appreciation, rather than trying to get other people to appreciate us. When you open to receiving appreciation and learn how to appreciate skillfully, other people go to great lengths to appreciate you.
8. We are much more interested in how people are the same than how they are different. While some approaches focus on the differences between men and women, for example, we focus on the underlying unity of genders. Whether you are in a same-sex relationship, a multi-cultural relationship or any other variation, you still face core issues common to all.
9. Creativity is crucial to relationship harmony. Unless both people express their creativity, they are going to think the other is oppressing it.
10. Most relationship problems can be resolved with five questions: What am I not facing? What truths have I not spoken? What have I been blaming others for that I need to own responsibility for creating? What choices do I need to make? What actions do I need to take?
