Once upon a time two girls met at a wedding. They became good friends and then they fell in love. They lived together, raised a child together, went to church, travelled, and worked. Fourteen years later, they were finally allowed to get married. They're planning to live happily ever after ... but only if they live in a very few places.
Where can same sex couples be legally married?
This is a list of places in the world where same sex couples can marry with the same rights as opposite sex couples.
- Massachusetts, USA: Massachusetts offers equal rights, but because of federal law, some rights are limited (such as federal tax, etc.)
- California, USA: Keep your eye out. A referendum could overturn this decision in November 2008.
- Connecticut, USA: The most recent addition, due to a favorable state Supreme Court decision.
- Denmark: the first country to allow same-sex marriage
- The Netherlands
- Belgium
- Canada
- South Africa: Do you believe this nation, an example of oppression not very long ago, now allows same sex marriage?
- Spain
Civil Unions
Civil Unions, domestic partnerships, or registered partnerships offer some of the benefits of marriage. Some local areas also offer some rights, but these are places that have more extensive rights.
- Andorra, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
- New Jersey and Vermont
