Al-Farouq Aminu Teams Up with GEEK EYEWEAR

GEEKS GOT GAME!

AL-FAROUQ AMINU and GEEK EYEWEAR

PRESS RELEASE

September 4, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA)

GEEKS GOT GAME!
Al-Farouq Aminu, one of the top players of the 2010 NBA draft, created a sensation at the NBA Draft on ESPN by wearing a fashionably outrageous pair of eyeglasses. Turns out the glasses were designed and manufactured by Los Angeles based GEEK EYEWEAR, a brand known for combining daring wit and sexiness to create instant attraction%u2026.eyewear that is memorable for the bold and beautiful.

"Geek Eyewear is not just for computer nerds and Sci Fi addicts" explains Alena Lehrer, who created GEEK EYEWEAR. "The line was developed to express an attitude." Today's geek is a complete individual, which is what I believe originally drew Farouq to GEEK EYEWEAR. Farouq is not the typical ball player: Aminu was
a member of the 2008 McDonald's All American Team and distinguished himself as one of the country's best forwards. Off the court, Farouq has a great sense of humor and comes across as comfortable with who he is. Farouq's charisma is a big part of his appearance, which explains his stand-out choice in GEEK EYEWEAR.

The phones started ringing immediately, Alena Lehrer reports. The picture of Farouq at 2010 NBA Draft on ESPN was followed up with a picture that went viral on the Internet of a smiling Farouq with his big arms outstretched holding a basketball, wearing a different pair of GEEK EYEWEAR. "By this point, we looked at ourselves," Alena says, "we gotta find this guy." But it was even easier than that, Farouq's management company, IAM Sports & Entertainment was a step ahead. In less than a week, a deal was set and Al-Farouq Aminu became the official spokesperson of GEEK EYEWEAR.

"Creativity. Originality. Excellence. These are qualities I strive for both on and off the court, Farouq Aminu stated. In Geek Eyewear, I see the same attributes in their glasses designs, as well in the nature of the company
as a whole. I couldn't be more excited to be working with the entire Geek team."

How have the early geeks who collect comic books and attend 48 hour Star-Trek marathons taken to a 6-foot-9 geek who will be a starter in the NBA? To be a geek is simply to your own person, to have your own style. While the terms of the agreement remains private, the creators of Geek Eyewear could not be happier.
"We created this look years ago, it's often emulated, but just like Farouq, we're totally original. Farouq plays with tremendous poise and confidence, which perfectly embodies the essence of the GEEK EYEWEAR brand. Some people wear glasses as if they are ashamed, they just want to blend in. GEEK EYEWEAR makes a statement that I'm cool, I'm strong, sexy and hip.

ARE CELEBRITIES THE TRENDSETTERS?

geek celebrities

Justin Timberlake and Jessica BielTechnically, Cary Grant was not a Geek. Yet in the classic film To Kill A Mockingbird, Grant displays an encyclopedic knowledge of both fact and circumstance. The style he wore has attracted Geeks all over the world for its bold yet sophisticated look.
.....

Madonna has shown that she's hip with the youngsters by donning the latest in Buddy Holly glasses that seem to have inexplicably come back into style. She wore the geeky glasses at a performance in NY on her Sticky and Sweet tour. The Independent notes that the way to pull of Geek look is to let the Geek glasses serve as a counterpoint to your natural beauty. Source: www.celebitchy.com

Rebounding, presumably, will not be an issue for the Clippers next season.
Al-Farouq Aminu, the 6-foot-9 forward from Wake Forest blessed with a 7-3 wingspan, will join Blake Griffin in the Clippers' frontcourt, giving them a formidable one-two punch.

Do Politicians Need Glasses?

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev puts on 3D glasses to watch a presentation at the opening ceremony of the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library in St Petersburg. Picture: AP

A lot of U.S. Presidents were Geeks. LBJ was a Geek, he faithfully wore a Shur-On frame that was made for him at Dal-Tex, the leading optical lab in Dallas at the time. Harry Truman was a Nerd. The "Man from Missouri" who believed it when he "piss on it" was famous for a Geeky style of small thick plastic frames that were oval in shape, definitely Geek! Adlai Stevenson tried to be a Geek, Thomas Dewey was a speckled "nerd," but these guys lost elections and today's Geeks never lose. Barack Obama? He'd look good in the same glasses Cary Grant used to wear.

What is Geek Chic?

Geek Chic is a style, trend, cultural movement for Geeks that love Geek Eyewear

What is geek chic?

Is it a style, a trend, a movement, a cultural shift or just a love affair with all things uncool? First off, what is a geek? If you're getting ready to argue about this definition, you might be one of them. A geek has obsessive, esoteric knowledge about mass media, pop culture and technology. Geeks are generally smart, they're passionate about things most people don't care about, and most of them tend to be early adopters when it comes to the latest gadgets.

Geek message boards talk about the latest casting rumors for "Watchmen," not who's going to win the Super Bowl. Take a look at our television icons, for instance. Ugly Betty, one of TV's most popular shows, features a girl who looks like someone's prom date nightmare. She is a geek poster girl, from her loud, uncoordinated outfits to her shiny, in-your-face braces. The fact that she works at a fashion magazine just underscores her lack of conformity, and when we see her triumph week after week over the beautiful people, even those ex-cheerleaders must feel a little tug of excitement. And the ultimate geek, Harry Potter, is the most popular non-existent kid in history.

Fashion has even slipped into the realm of the pasty-faced gamer. Check out ads for fashionable eyewear: The frames that used to be costume pieces for kids to wear with their pocket protectors and suspenders are now high fashion (and expensive.) Yes, it's true, geek chic is back. This time around, however, when you happen to see someone doing the geek-chic thing at a party, it's likely their social, successful and someone you should be friends with.

Not to be confused with the hipster who relishes fashion items you haven't heard of and ironic slogans, the "chic geek" is polished, presentable and doesn't feel compelled to scour the city for obscure apparel. Whether you're a bona fide geek or you just dig some of the eyewear, we've put together a website to help you wear this look the fashionable way.

Some say Sarah Palin's glasses are "geeky", but I really like the look of her in aviator sunglasses when she is out flying her airplane.

Girls Gone Geeky. Brainy is definitely sexy - in pop culture and Chicago, it has never been more chic to be a gild geek. ( Red Eye )
