Gene Stratton-Porter: Novelist and Naturalist of the Early 1900s

Ranked #4,793 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #176,403 overall

Birdwoman of the Limberlost

Gene Stratton-Porter was a naturalist, a photographer and a novelist in the early 1900s. Her heartwarming stories of romance remain popular with their old-fashioned values of honor and hard work.

I read them when I was young, and loved them so much that they are in the "keeper" section of my personal library. My sister was so influenced by the author's messages about conservation and nature, that she performs as Gene Stratton-Porter at libraries, festivals, senior centers and nature sites.

If you're a fan of Gene Stratton-Porter, read on to learn more about her life. If the author is new for you, I hope I inspire you to sample one of her books. She was a remarkable woman and turned many readers into nature lovers.

I first discovered Gene Stratton Porter's books on my grandmother's bookshelves. My favorite so far is Girl of the Limberlost but after reading these reviews I can hardly wait to read more of her stories.

When I began this lens I had no clue that she was the author of Laddie - now I see I've missed getting to know a great author. I hope to find more of her books! Thank you for sharing her story. Blessed by a Squid Angel.

I've not heard of Gene Stratton-Porter before now, but you've certainly intrigued me with this lens. Guess I'll have to get started on these books. Thanks for sharing.

I just wrote a huge note here and lost it to a squidoo glitch.
Will shorten it this time by saying The Harvester is my favorite,
and Stratton-Porter is a long time favorite writer of mine.

You have sparked my interest. I'm not familiar with Gene Stratton-Porter at all, but she sounds like the kind of writer I'd love to read. Thank you for sharing her with me. I KNOW I'll be investigating more about her and her books.

Gene was most definately a woman before her time. She finally got tired of tripping over her long skirts covered in mud, so she switched to wearing pants in the Limberlost swamp. I loved and read all her novels long before I discovered her books on nature with details on habitat of the insects and birds. To my amazment I learned about the Cynthia Moth from her book and felt a deep connection to Gene to the point of every time I've given a performance as Gene a moth or butterfly appears. One tiny moth landed on my shoulder, then fluttered right under my nose, just before I went on stage. It was as though Gene was trying to get my attention.

I don't have a favorite but I do love Anne of Green Gables and Harry Potter. I hadn't heard of Gene Stratton Porter before.

OH, Gene Stratton Porter was my favorite author as a child, and remains so today.
I had to do a figurative coin toss to decide whether Freckles or The Harvester is my favorite. I love ALL Porter's characters but guess The Harvester is my favorite.
The environmental impact of these books is even more powerful today than it was in Porter's day. Anyone who loves this country, and wants to know what life was like before the modern era, MUST read these beautiful books!! 5-fave-lensrolled to all my lenses, and congrats for honoring one of the best writers of any era.
