What is the ONE THING you absolutely need to succeed online?

If you're just starting out online, you may think all you have to do is put up a site, put up some content and set up a sales page and let the traffic roll in.  Well, I've got news for you, you will most likely make zero money doing this.  Because you're missing one crucial element.

See, if your sales system is like the one I described above, it relies on random people happening to arrive at your site, and in that one visit, deciding to buy your product.

Here's a little secret - most of these people won't buy.  Following this method is like trying to get food by standing outside your house hoping some passing fruit will fall into your hands - not a good strategy!

When people come to your site, you want to retain them - you want to be able to build a relationship with them so you can really get them interested in your product or service, so they will eventually buy.  You want them to remember you, and tell their friends.

So what's the ONE THING you need to turn all this traffic into a steady, repeating stream of revenue?  You need a list of sales leads!  When people come to your site, you shouldn't sell them something right away.  Instead, send them to a subscribe form first.  Once they've "opted in" -- indicated that they're interested in hearing more from you, you've got them on your list and you can begin building that relationship that will turn visitors into repeat buyers!

The great thing about a list is it's perpetual.  These people will always be interested in this topic! (or if they're not they can always unsubscribe)  And the ones who stay on the list will be the most likely to buy the things you promote now and long into the future.  This means that once you have a list, you can literally push a button (the "send" button for your mailings!) and money will pour into your bank account!  Once you've got a list it's really that simple!

Now, some of you may be saying "hang on, Tellman, I already have a web site without a list and I'm generating income!"  Well then you've been pretty lucky and you're probably really good at getting traffic.  But let me tell you something -- if you'd had a list all this time you could easily have been generating ten to a hundred times as much money from that same amount of traffic, with a lot less work than you're putting in now!

The amount of money you make each time you "push that button" is entirely determined by how many people you have on your list!  So if you double the size of your list, you've just doubled your income!  Pretty sweet, huh?

So whether you're a complete beginner at online business or you've been doing it a while, you're going to want to start building your list as soon as possible!

Treat Your Business Like a Cake!

Don't you want your online business to be as yummy as this cake?There are thousands of ways to become successful online. Sounds like it's easy, right? Trouble is, there are millions if not billions of ways to NOT become successful online. If you're jumping into this blind, you're pretty likely to be following one of the ways that won't work!

Imagine you want to bake a cake. You could go to the store and buy a bunch of random ingredients that you guess might make a good cake. But unless you're an experienced baker, you're likely to create a disaster instead. What's that? 1/2 cup of Nutmeg is too much? I should've added eggs? I guess adding all that salt was a bad idea...

Of course, the best way to do it is to follow a recipe! Someone has spent lots of time already perfecting a great cake and has written down step-by-step instructions on how to do it! Of course they'll only work if you follow them to the letter!

Lots of people starting out in internet marketing are kind of in awe of all the possibilities. They learn a bunch of different things and try to glom them all together as they go. Well, that's not gonna work so well! You can't just pick and choose various aspects of several systems either, because what you end up with is still an untested, untried, "mutant" system. And it's probably gonna be one of the billions of techniques that doesn't work.

So while you're starting out, treat your business like you would a cake. Don't invent your own untested recipe. Don't combine half the ingredients of an angel food cake with half the ingredients of an ice cream cake. Don't throw a quiche in there. Just stick to one recipe that's proven to work. Follow it to the letter! I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised!

5 Steps To Build Your List

1. Buy a domain

Consider buying a domain with a keyword for your niche in it. Domains are cheap, under $10 a year, but having one is essential.

2. Get an autoresponder account

An autoresponder will allow you to create a form to collect names and email addresses. It will also house the data for you, and handle confirmations and unsubscribes. This is extremely important, as you don't want to break any SPAM laws. Plus, it's just more efficient. This will cost you between $20 and $50 a month, depending on the company you choose.

3. Create a giveaway offer

You can use articles about your niche that you gather from one of the online directories, as long as you maintain the author's information. In other words, you have to give the authors full credit for the articles, but you can add an introduction, as an editor, and give the report away in exchange for people's names and email addresses.

4. Create a squeeze page

A squeeze page is nothing more than a headline, 3 - 5 bullet points that outline the benefits of your giveaway report, and an opt-in box, where people enter their names and email addresses.

5. Drive traffic to your squeeze page

There are many different ways that you can drive traffic to any page online. Blogging, writing and posting articles in directories, podcasting, search engine optimization, and Web 2.0 sources, like Facebook, Squidoo, and Twitter are only a few. Send as much traffic as you can to your squeeze page and build your list as quickly as you can.

Sure, you've got your site up. But how do you know if it's working the way you want? Are you making the most of your traffic? Which of your pages are performing well, and which aren't getting much of a response? Well there are some amazing web tools out there to help you find this stuff out, and get your website humming like a fine-tuned engine, and pouring cash into your bank account! And the best part is, they're all either free or so cheap you can afford 'em with the change behind your couch.
Google Analytics
Completely free, easy to use. This is the most popular analytics tool out there. And it's by Google so you know it's good. You'll need a google account to sign up. You can get one for free - follow the instructions on the site.
Crazy Egg
Not as full-featured as Google's analytics tool, but Crazy Egg has a very vibrant and easy-to-read reports screen, where you can follow your visitors' paths through the site in vibrant color.
My Blog Log
This one's specifically for Wordpress Blogs. If you're not running a Wordpress blog you should be (you can check out my quickstart videos to learn how). My Blog Log is a wordpress plugin that will give you instant data on how many people have visited your blog, how they got there, and which pages they looked at while they were there. Great for determining which of your blog articles got the most interest.
10³ Bees
10³ Bees is another Wordpress plugin - this one focuses on what keywords people are searching for that bring them to your blog. If you know anything about search engine optimization, you know that the right keywords can pure gold for your business. So this is a great way to figure out which keywords to use.

Supercharge Your List and Build Business Relationships

If list building is the hidden secret to making money online, then joint ventures are the hidden secret to list building. Now, there are all sorts of joint ventures and the topic is nearly endless. The kind I'm referring to here is the simplest form of joint venture, a cross promotion. That's where you contact someone in your niche who has a list of about the same size as yours, and you promote each other's lists to your lists. If you arrange a cross promotion properly, you can multiply the size of your list overnight!

Note that you need to have a few subscribers first, otherwise it won't be worth the time of your potential partner. The idea is to find someone with a similar size list.

So how do you go about arranging a joint venture? Start off by doing a google search for the keywords in your niche. Go through the sites that come up one by one, and look for someone who's got a place to sign up for their mailing list. If you find one, great! This means that this person has a list! You'll probably want to opt in so you can get more of an idea about their business. Besides, it can't hurt to learn all you can about your niche - maybe they've got some great info to share with you!

Now, if you're selling a specific product, you can certainly arrange a cross-promotion with someone selling the same product, but it's probably going to be better to find someone with a similar product that's not in competition with yours. Remember, it's all about the niche - the group of people you're selling to. You definitely want to find someone who's got the same target audience as you, otherwise you'd be wasting your time and theirs.

For example, let's say your niche is pet turtle owners. You happen to be selling little hula hoops for the turtles, and you find someone who's selling a "teach your turtle to hula" instructional course. Well, that's perfect!

Next, try to find some contact information for this person. Hopefully they have a phone number, or a support link. Ideally you want to contact this person directly, but if you have to go through their support team, that might end up working, too.

OK, now it's time to actually contact them and make your proposal! Remember the important thing is to start off by telling your potential JV partner how this will benefit THEM. That's easy because it definitely will! It'll increase the size of their list and multiply their business' revenue. And all you ask is that they do the same for you. Also make sure to tell how many subscribers you have on your list so they know if it's worth their time the same as it's worth yours. If their list is much larger than yours they may not feel it's worth their while to do.

The key thing to note here is that if you want to be successful with JVs you need to do this many many times. Go through every site you can find and write down the contact information for every person in the same niche who has a list. Contact all of them. Most won't respond, or will turn the offer down, at least when you're just starting out. Usually marketers who have a list substantially larger than yours won't feel it's worth it. But you'll probably find a few marketers who are willing to take you up on it.

Awesome! Once you've got a couple of these mailings lined up, you're good to go and you'll see your list growing like gangbusters! Plus, now you've got some JV allies in your niche, and you can build a business relationship and continue to cross promote and help each other out long into the future!

How to Get Your Squeeze Page to Rank in Searches

Squeeze Pages are People Magnets... Here's how to Point a Google Magnet at Your Squeeze Page!Are you rockin' a squeeze page yet? If not you should check out my free quickstart video course because squeeze pages KICK BUTT. I've been doing this for a while and I can tell you that there's nothing better for lead generation than a squeeze page.

It's too bad that search engines don't like squeeze pages as much as us internet marketers do! See, search engines are really into pages with a lot of content, and content that gets updated frequently. A good squeeze page has very little content, just a few teaser bits of information about all the great stuff your visitors will get when they sign up. So how do you get massive search engine traffic to go to your squeeze pages? Easy! Build some pages to link to your squeeze page that are search engine magnets. They freakin' love this stuff. Check it out:

Tip 1: Build a Wordpress blog! Wordpress blogs are total Google magnets. They're dynamic, and they're totally optimized to the gills to be noticed and ranked by Google. Of course, then you need to fill your blog with all sorts of handy tips about your niche. And update it frequently! Make sure you have a link to your squeeze page on the blog somewhere really prominent, like up at the top of the sidebar. And you can also link to your squeeze page at the end of your posts - when it makes sense.

Every time you write a post to your blog, be sure to bookmark it using the major social bookmarking sites. I'm talking about Digg, Propeller, Reddit, Delicious, StumbleUpon, and Mixx. There are many more - feel free to sign up for and use as many as you can. You'll get better results with some than with others, but they're all free, and it only takes like 10 seconds to bookmark your page with each one, so it's totally worth it.

Tip 2: What's another great way to drive traffic to your squeeze page? You're lookin' at it! Squidoo is an excellent way to build a ton of traffic. It generally takes a bit longer for some serious traffic to build than with blog traffic, but if you have a good lens on your subject that you update regularly, you should start to see some mega traffic to your squeeze page within 6 months. One important note: Squidoo has a policy limiting the number of links you can put to one domain. So it's important to limit the number of links to your squeeze page to nine, no more than that. You can make those links as big and dramatic as you want though :-)
