Genital Herpes Symptoms and Treatment

Genital herpes is acquired by having sexual intercourse with a person infected with the virus, making it a sexually transmitted disease. The virus is transferred to another person by the secretions of the genitals, because the virus can be found on those secretions. It can be transferred even if a person does not appear to have the virus, because the symptoms are unseen. However, it is more than likely to be transferred when sores are visible. After being transferred, the sores will be visible in the next 4-7 days.

These are the early symptoms of genital herpes: an itching or burning feeling in the genital or anal area, vaginal discharge in women, a feeling of pressure in the area below the stomach, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms that includes fever and pain in the legs, buttocks, or the genital area itself.
The sores can also be seen up on a women's cervix (the opening to the uterus or womb) or the urinary passage of men. After a few days or weeks, the sores will then heal without scarring.

There are also later symptoms that can occur. These are the following symptoms: headache, fever, small bumps, itching or burning in the genital area, swollen glands in the genital area, muscle aches, pain when urinating, vaginal discharge in women, pain in the legs, buttocks, or the genital area and a feeling of discomfort in your stomach.
Although some people may not have these symptoms, they may still have genital herpes. In fact, people with herpes can make people more susceptible to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, it can make HIV infected people spread the HIV better.

Genital herpes stays on the nerve cells after all the symptoms are gone, though it becomes dormant afterwards. It can reawaken and cause an outbreak by some factors such as getting sick, stressed, or when women have their period.
To make sure a person does not have herpes, they have to get diagnosed. To people that have genital herpes there are methods you can use to prevent the spread of the virus like not having sex while infected, using condoms, and being faithful by having only one sex partner.

Genital herpes can also make cause problems during pregnancy. Having the first outbreak while pregnant can affect the baby's central nervous system and it may eventually lead to death. Women who are about to deliver their baby while having an outbreak, a cesarean delivery is usually performed to avoid physical contact of the infected area to the body. Women can also breastfeed their babies as long as they cover the parts with an infection. Can genital herpes cause any other problems? Usually, genital herpes infections do not cause major problems in healthy adults.
