Geology Rocks: A Homeschool Unit Study

Ranked #1,644 in Education, #38,741 overall

An Introduction to Geology and Space Science

My kiddos have been asking all kinds of questions about earth and space. I've thereby opted to develop 3 new unit studies: Rocks & Minerals, Weather & Climate, and Astronomy & Space. In doing so, I have discovered that creating a Squidoo Lens is a great way to organize my resources and simultaneously share my research with others. I hope you will find benefit it this lens and others I've created.

The materials presented here a meant to provide teachers (both at home and in the classroom) with a plethora of ideas and resources to pull from. You'll find suggested readings, living books, lapbooking materials, printables and extensive links to background information.

Earth Logic :: Our Dynamic Earth

Earth Science Curriculum for the Logic Stage or Middle Level Student

Our Dynamic EarthFor years, I have wanted to put together a collection of science lessons and activities for middle-level students. I am excited to share with you that my vision is finally coming to fruition. My intent is to create three comprehensive collections: Life Logic (biology, botany, zoology, marine science and ecology), Earth Logic (oceanography, geology, meteorology, astronomy), and Physics Logic (physics and chemistry)

My goal in writing this curriculum is to provide a hands-on science curriculum that will challenge middle-level students and instill a love of science. I have included hands-on activities every week, readings, as well as long-term projects. All of the activities described have been field tested in the public school setting with students in 4th-6th grade. The lessons are written with homeschooling families in mind but can also be adapted to a co-op or classroom setting.

The first volume of lessons, Earth Logic: Our Dynamic Earth, is a 10 week unit study on the geology of our Earth incorporating scientific inquiry and language arts applications.

Hand-on Activities

A brief glimpse of activities you may wish to explore.

  1. Use polymer clay to build a 3D model of the earth's layers.
  2. Illustrate the layers of earth's atmosphere and show the heights achieved by hot air balloons & other technological learning tools.
  3. Create a lapbook for each category described here (Rocks & Minerals, Weather & Climate, and Astronomy & Space).

Create a Picture Dictionary

Geography terms in words & pictures

Do your children enjoy sketching and doodling? Then a Geography Picture Dictionary is the perfect learning activity.

Do You Lapbook?

Creative expression & application

A lapbook is basically an educational learning tool made from a file folder. They can be done at the close of your unit studies to highlight key points the kids have learned - a place to glue projects or little books they've made for the unit, be based solely on a book your child has just read or help reinforce skills or concepts. It can be used to document what your children have learned or even to display and refer back to.
