Irritability and spitting up are the common symptoms for infant acid reflux. However, a few serious symptoms may signify GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux) in a baby. Parents of the infant must stay alert to notice if it is a general reflux symptom or serious GERD symptoms in infant.

However, it is also possible that an infant may have symptoms for reflux and still he may not be suffering from GERD. GERD generally occurs due to muscle relaxation towards the end of esophagus. This leads to a condition when all stomach content including gastric acid flows back upwards into esophagus from the stomach. This is commonly noticed in even normal infants. In fact, the risk of occurrence of this condition is high in most babies during the initial 3 months after their birth.

Healing from such symptoms takes place naturally in most babies as they stop spitting when they are 12-18 months old. Nonetheless, there are a few rare cases when babies develop severe symptoms of reflux.

So, some infants who have to suffer from serious GERD symptoms undergo many problems along with the severity of symptoms. Many of them are unable to retain much food in the stomach. This often causes poor growth.

Ill infants may also refuse to take the feeds because of pain building at the time of swallowing and may become easily irritated. Breathing problems is another serious symptom for infant suffering from GERD. There may also be blood loss due to the acid that may cause esophagus to burn.
