Get Rid of Lawn Moles

You know the vision: A deep green, perfectly manicured yard where children play and adults sit and enjoy a sunny spring or summer day. It's a vision shared by homeowners everywhere.

Sadly, all too many property owners know the frustration of having that vision ruined by moles and other burrowing pests such as voles and gophers. And it's not just homeowners -- golf course operators, office park proprietors and commercial real estate developers often must deal with the question of how to get rid of lawn moles.

Unlike some similar burrowing pests, moles don't eat plants or plant roots. They are insectivores, meaning they like to dine on insects as well as worms.

The damage that moles do to plants - including grass - is a consequence of their burrowing activity in the soil. This activity causes roots to separate from the rest of the plant.

Besides damaging plants to the point of the plants dying, moles create unsightly mounds of dirt on a lawn. Perhaps surprisingly, it doesn't take many moles to turn even a large yard into a mess; the average number of moles is just 3 per acre!

The scary thing about moles is that one of these little animals can and will tunnel 100 feet per day. And because they almost never come above ground where you can see them, they're adept at escaping both you and any countermeasures you may attempt.

Quite frankly, it's not easy to get rid of lawn moles. Fortunately, it's not impossible.

Of all the ways to get rid of lawn moles, the use of mole traps may be the most effective. But you have to use the right kind of trap, and have to use it correctly.

Your local garden supply store will likely have people who can advise you as to what works best in your area for getting rid of moles.

Although some homeowners have been known to give up in their battle against moles, that is a mistake. These damaging little creatures can destroy your lawn and with it your peace of mind.

Remember, it's your lawn. Don't give up!

There's a man named Michael, from Oregon, who was about ready to throw in the towel because of a mole problem.

He said he had reached the point "where I was spending hours every week cleaning up the damage in my yard and spending a lot of money on sprays, bait and deterrents that did nothing to solve the problem."

Finally, though, he learned that the only really effective way to get rid of lawn moles involves a special type of trap. Once he obtained one of those traps, and learned how to use it correctly, his problem was over.

With the trap and his new-found knowledge, he reports successfully catching four moles.

"I have not had a new mole mound since I got the last one. ... My neighbor has been trying to persuade me to tell him what I am doing differently. Perhaps I should charge him $100 per mole?"

This man is living proof that it's not impossible to get rid of lawn moles. All it takes is the proper information and some relatively inexpensive equipment.

Everybody loves a nice green lawn. Families love to romp and play on them, and entertain guests on them.

Because of this widespread desire for a nice, healthy yard, people will even pay other people to get rid of lawn moles. It's true!

Did you know there's a professional organization of mole catchers (sometimes written as one word, "molecatchers") in Britain? This organization even offers professional training to people who want to make a living trapping moles.

Wherever you may live, once you learn the right way to get rid of people's mole problems, you can charge for your expertise, too.

Maybe you just want to rid your own lawn of moles and have no desire to be a professional molecatcher. But it's something to think about!
