Get Tech into your Elementary Class

In traditional classroom settings, teachers had to rely on text books and other printed material to draw out information and lesson plans. While technology has been evolving over the years - has anyone seen a mimeograph machine in this century - it has never been so rapid as in the past fifty. With the advent of the computer and the creation of the Internet, it is now much easier to integrate technology in your classroom.

While this may seem like a simple concept, the sheer amount of information and options available can make it difficult to even get started. What technology is suitable for your elementary students? How does that technology apply to the lesson within the curriculum? How do I ensure that nothing goes wrong?

All of these questions can run through your mind during the process and I assure you, the first two are simple to answer with a little bit of research. As for the last question, the best answer is that there really is no way to ensure you won't run into problems. Even a test run doesn't guarantee that everything is foolproof. Just be prepared with a plan B that allows you to easily integrate technology in your classroom without straining your patience.

The Internet

It wasn't that long ago that teachers did all of their teaching without the help of something called the Internet. Today, you would be hard pressed to find a teacher that has not utilized this source in the classroom. As this technology becomes more important in the educational environment, schools are now being retrofitted to ensure students and teachers have access to the Internet in every classroom.

With the advancements in wireless, schools have even more options for networking the entire building without the overuse of wires. The possibilities in a wireless environment are virtually endless, but students do have to be taught how to use this powerful tool properly. While the Internet holds tremendous educational opportunity, there are also dangers that can offset the educational benefit.

Research

Research is the main reason to use the Internet to integrate technology in your classroom. Whether they are researching obscure topics or the latest news, the school library may lack the necessary resources to fully investigate. The Internet fills this void, providing students with a variety of research options.

As much benefit as the Internet provides in the amount of research that can be found, there is a question as to whether or not the information is credible and reliable. This is the perfect teaching moment to help your students to learn how to identify whether or not a source is reliable and what to do when they come across conflicting information. This may require a little footwork on your part, but it will be well worth it in the end.

Beyond the standard information resources that can be found on the Internet, there are other forms of technology that can be accessed through this medium. School videos are stored on websites and can be accessed for use; live debates can be shared in a podcast; panel discussions are available through live feeds and so much more. The options available to integrate technology in your classroom are many. The biggest challenge will be in selecting those that fit with your criteria.
