The First Steps To Getting A Squidoo Lens Indexed In Google

First Things First - Google Needs Something From You

Getting your Squidoo lens listed in Google
should be thought about from the very beginning. Right back when you first start thinking of creating your own lens. Never leave it until you have already created a lens as it could make it very difficult for you to get there at this point.

When you first create your lens, you want to be thinking about 'how' Google and other search engines list you. They don't come along and see your lens and say "Hey, Robyn has created another lens, let's make sure we send her lots of free traffic."

You need to know about how your lens gets listed before you can start to build a lens that stands a good chance of getting picked up and listed.

Think about what you type into a search engine when you are searching for something. This comes down to keyword research and is vital to the success of your lens. Over at Squidoo Queen I go into a whole chapter on this - it's THAT important.

Keeping your lenses built around your keyword research is key to getting your lens listed in the search engines.

At this point you should be totally happy with your lens and feel that it's going to really benefit your readers - it will wont it?

You're now happy that your lens is up to scratch and want to start getting some of that lovely free traffic from the search engines. Here's how you can start to get that lens listed in Google and other search engines .........

Which Search Engines Should You Try & Get Your Lens Listed In?

There's more than just Google out there you know!

We all want to get our lens listed on the first page of Google, after all, it's the biggest search engine out there. This should not be your only goal though.

Look back up this lens and look at those stats. That lens was getting most of it's traffic from Yahoo! Before you switch off though, think about 'who' uses Yahoo. People who are 35+ with disposable income, in other words - THE PEOPLE MOST LIKELY TO MAKE A PURCHASE ONLINE!

Never get hooked on the idea that Google is the be all and end all to get your lens listed with.

Let's Get Started

The most basic part of getting your lens listed in Google is adding your lens yourself to their listings. This is not something that only Google does, all the search engines have this facility. Here are the major players ....

Google's Add Url Page - This is where you can submit your Squidoo lens to Google asking for inclusion into their search results. This is NOT guaranteed to happen just because you do this.

Yahoo! Add Url Page - Yahoo! is fast becoming a MAJOR source of traffic for many of my lenses and should not be ignored. Again, you are NOT guaranteed to be included through this submission.

MSN Add Url Page - MSN is now starting to send a lot of traffic that should also be capitalized on - never ignore a search engine just because it's one YOU never use!

Once again, I want to emphasize that these three sites are the three major search engines that send me the most free traffic to my Squidoo lenses and the smaller search engines should not be ignored. Submitting to search engines should be done manually and although it can be time consuming and fairly boring it is the most basic task to get your lens listed..

OK I've Submitted My Lens To The Search Engines - Now What?

You've Done The Grunt Work - Let's Take It Further!

Once you have done the boring part of adding your Squidoo lens to the search engines (both large and small) it's time to start doing more to help get your Squidoo lens listed in Google (& other big search engines).

Squidoo Directories

The directories listed below are designed for Squidoo lenses so you wont have any problems having them accepted (unless you have a spam lens!) The point of adding your lens to directories is to get links to your lens from other lenses, sites and blogs.

It's these links that help Google to rank your lens and decide if it should be shown on their listings. A lens that has links from other lenses or sites is seen as a good lens - afterall, people wouldn't bother linking to a worthless site would they?

Squidutils Directory - This site is well worth visiting just for their content anyway and it will add your lens as long as you sign up and log in. Well worth exploring this site further than just the directory.

Lensroll Another great place to add your Squidoo lenses to.

I've taken away another link that I was using as it seems to have disapeared. I'm in the process of using three other directories that are designed for Squidoo lenses but until I see the results myself I wont recommend them. Remember to favourite this lens to keep updated with new additions.

Doing More To Get Listed In Google With Your Lens

The Next Step In Getting Google To Notice Your Lens

------------------>>--- >>---->>------>>
Or Your Lenses ?!?
------------------->>--- >>---->>------>>

From my own experience through my Squidoo lenses I have found that Google is much more likely to list your Squidoo lens if it already has traffic coming in.

One of the best ways to get this happening is to combine Squidoo and Bum Marketing - It shows you how to totally dominate both of them and get traffic flowing through your lens instantly!

Blogging For Traffic

If you already have a blog be sure to review your own lens on it and then link through to your Squidoo lenses. Keep the links to your lenses as relevant to your post as possible. Google likes to see links that are relevant remember and don't like to see a post about baby care linking to a lens about car washes!

Blogging is a great way to get Google (and others) to stand up and take notice of you. If you don't have a blog don't worry as you can borrow someone elses :)

By this I simply mean that you can go along and search for blogs that are using the 'do follow' tags. You see, most blogs don't use the follow tag or top commentators plugin as they don't want to encourage more comments which is likely to cause them a headache with more than normal spam comments.

Once you find sites that are using the 'do follow' tag you need to see if they are worth commenting on. For example, if the site has no page rank from Google and has no traffic coming through it then the chances of this link doing anything for you is slim.

Look for high page ranks, high traffic blogs and then comment on posts that you can add to. NEVER just write in the comments box something like "Great blog - thanks" it's likely going to get deleted as spam.

Think of what value you can add to the post that is already there, can you add further information, give an example of how you used the information etc.

I go into great detail about this at Blog Traffic Unleashed and the power of using social networking sites to get lots of traffic to your blog.

The Most Important Part Of Getting Your Lens Listed In Google

The most important thing with attempting to get your lenses listed in the search engines in patience - if you don't do it within a few days of creating your lens - KEEP GOING!

Never give up and feel that this is a lost cause. Some of my lenses have appeared within a few hours and others have taken a few weeks. (Shhhh, but I even have two that have NEVER been in the search engines at all)

Taking action is what will make you a successful marketer so keep going and success will follow.

What The Future Holds
