How to Get Through a Recession

Let's face it. We are headed for or in a recession. What does this mean for you? For everybody it's different. For someone in high school it's really not that bad. Stocks are falling, real estate is down and they still have years of education in front of them before they need to fight over available jobs. Those that are losing their 401k or have been laid off, it's a different story. In order to get through this everyone needs to do a couple things. 1. Do a personal assessment. 2. Locate options. 3. Go to work.

Personal Assessment

This starts with you and ends with you

Take out all exterior influences and look at yourself. How is your career (or lack of) doing? Financially, how much debt do you have? What level of education do you have? You really want to go over everything and find out all of this.
Important!

STAY POSITIVE! Don't get discouraged. Make a plan and start doing it.

Locate Options

options options options

There really are tons of options for you to pursue. Warning! That doesn't mean it will be easy. Based on your current situation, age and other smaller factors now might be the time to get higher education, new training or just be crazy and try something new! Education is great. You can never have too much. Go get a grade degree or better yet get an online degree. Find trainings that pertain to your field. If you're finding your field might not be where you want to be go do something crazy. Do Teach for America. Try the Peace Corp. If you're under 42 join the National Guard. Look into things like this that will change your life and others. There are tons of organization looking for people with any type of experience that can add to their organization. Look for lobby groups or non-governmental organizations you might be interested in.

Go to Work

Put your blinders on and go get it.

This is the best part. After you know what you want to do and you have committed to doing it, and then do it. Just do it! Don't worry about other outside influences that might want to throw you off. Just go get it. There are people in their 80's getting college degrees. If they can do that you can do anything. Go get a pilot's license, start a new charity. Do whatever you want, just do it. This is hard and it takes time. If you don't have a bachelor's degree it still takes time. And its work, any ,Accredited College is going to require you to put in your time and work to get that degree. Go get it and see what great opportunities open up!

5 Steps to Recession Proof Yourself

1. Clean up your balance sheet- pay down your cards, sell everything and live on the basics, stop eating out so much and us cash, cash, cash. No more credit cards!
2. Rearrange priorities - look ahead and decide what you want. Start thinking about what you want and not what you don't want.
3. Consider changing careers- during a down turn like we are in now, many new debt free businesses emerge. Jump on the band wagon and get off a sinking ship!
4. "What goes up must come down, spinning wheel, round and round." Remember stuff goes around, the market is the same. Life is cyclical and stuff will recover!
5. At times we learn more from our failures then our success. Build a portfolio that caters to clients not employers and do what you do best!
