Important Information About Getting Sober and Staying Sober

Various alcohol addiction treatment approaches work differently for different people.  Like any chronic disease, however, there are varying degrees of success when it comes to treatment.  Before treatment can even take place, however, people not only need to admit that they have a drinking problem, but they also need to want to quit drinking and learn how to get sober.

Staying Sober

Getting sober is obviously an important step in overcoming alcoholism and restoring an individual's life.  Everyone with a drinking problem, however, needs to keep in mind that getting sober is only half the battle.  The other half, or as Paul Harvey would say, "the rest of the story," unfortunately, is staying sober.

Smart and Sober Living

Although most alcoholics need help to recover from their disease, research has shown that with support, treatment, and effective rehab, many people are able to stop drinking, learn how to get sober, remain safe and sober, and restore their lives.  In short, abstaining from alcohol is the route to smart and sober living.

Professional Alcohol Treatment and Living Sober

Research studies demonstrate persuasive evidence that quality alcoholism treatment approaches, effective alcoholism intervention, and alcohol dependency prevention attempts not only lead to sobriety, but they also lead to incontrovertible reductions in cancer, hearth disease, child abuse, strokes, traffic fatalities, crime, unwanted pregnancy, HIV, and child abuse.

Sober Celebrities

It is interesting to point out that a number of celebrities have essentially proclaimed their sobriety after having legal problems (such as receiving a DUI) or relationship problems (such as spousal abuse).  It is also interesting to note that frequently when celebrities have a "drinking problem" they somehow end up going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Getting Sober and Staying Sober:  Conclusion

Effective treatment for alcohol addiction and drug abuse improves an individual's quality of life, health, and job performance while at the same time minimizing drug abuse, family dysfunction, and involvement with the criminal justice system.  The bottom line:  getting sober and staying sober are probably the key factors in alcoholics becoming healthier and reclaiming their lives.

Getting Sober and Other Alcohol-Related Quick Facts

Did you know...

"Many of today's young people in the U.S. seemingly do not see the negative consequences of alcohol abuse or the destruction caused by gambling addiction. The youth of today know what they see and from their perspective, drinking and gambling look like fun. The big question, then, is this: how do we motivate today's youth to see and comprehend the unhealthy and the devastating outcomes that are intimately related to abusive drinking and addictive gambling?"

"The media and popular culture in the U.S. are filled with messages and images that legitimize or even glamorize frequent or excessive drinking. Also, associating with people who are able to drink socially, and encourage the same behavior in those around them, is dangerous to the alcoholic trying to abstain from drinking."

"According to one U.S. study, 68% of those people who come to a trauma center have an alcohol or drug problem."

"It is important for drinkers to realize that when they frequently abuse alcohol on a regular basis, they increase the risk of becoming an alcoholic."

"Some people with alcoholism may have inherited dysfunction in the transmission of serotonin. This is an important brain chemical known as a neurotransmitter that is important for well-being and associated behaviors such as relaxation, sleep, and eating."

"U.S. research indicates that children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk than other children of becoming alcoholics."

"Medical research shows that pregnant women who acquire the AIDS virus through intravenous drug use pass the virus to their newborn infant."

"Limited work supervision, frequently a problem on evening shifts, has been correlated with employee alcohol problems. In one study of 832 workers at a relatively large manufacturing plant, employees on evening shifts, during which supervision was reduced, were more likely than those on other shifts to report drinking at work."

"According to U.S. drunk driving statistics, in 2001, more than half a million people were injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present, an average of one person injured approximately every two minutes."

"Research shows that to succeed, alcohol abuse prevention and reduction efforts must take into account the dynamic developmental processes of adolescence, the influence of an adolescent's environment, and the role of individual characteristics in the adolescent's decision to drink."

"Research shows that not every person is the same regarding the various alcohol abuse treatments that are available. In fact, it can be concluded that whatever alcohol abuse treatment "works" for one person may not necessarily work for another person."

"Research demonstrates the fact that if someone is not willing to be honest about their drinking habits, it is difficult, if not impossible, to accurately diagnose alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence."

"A message to people who get intoxicated infrequently: If you think getting drunk only a few times per year is no big thing your are mistaken. Getting drunk can result in a traffic accident regardless of how often an individual drinks alcohol."

"An estimated 6.6 million American children under 18 live in households with at least one alcoholic parent."

"According to the research literature, it is important for drinkers to realize that when they frequently abuse alcohol on a regular basis, they increase the risk of becoming an alcoholic."

"To make the argument for alcohol abstention and pregnancy even stronger, according to recent U.S. alcoholism studies, women who continue to drink even small amounts of alcohol while trying to become pregnant, may reduce their chances of conceiving."

"According to U.S. alcohol abuse researchers, 5% of people who experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms suffer symptoms so severe that they must be treated in a hospital or in an alcohol rehabilitation facility that specializes in detoxification."

"According to the substance abuse literature, prevention messages can make a positive difference. In a word, these messages can convey information to change people's attitudes about drug use and alcohol drinking behavior in a positive manner."

"Alcoholism patients and their doctors will need to work together over the years to maintain the patient's sobriety and to address any complications that may arise from alcohol damage."

"Recent advertising expenditures in the United States for beer, wine, and liquor combined ($1.4 billion) totaled about 20 times the amount spent on milk ads ($70.5 million). A total of $910.4 million was spent on beer ads, $135.2 million on wine ads, and $377 million on liquor ads."

"In one survey that focused on college drinking behavior during a one-month period of time, 27.4% of American college students across the nation had driven a motor vehicle after drinking alcohol during this 30-day time period."

"A wide variety of different approaches exist for treating drug and alcohol withdrawal. While some of these treatment methodologies employ doctor prescribed medications, many, on the other hand, do not."

"Rather than focusing on their drinking as the cause of the many problems they face, alcoholics, during the second stage of alcoholism, start to blame others and things external to themselves."

"The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the 21-year-old minimum drinking age laws have saved 21,887 American lives since the mid-1970s."

"Anheuser-Busch, brewers of Budweiser, hair-tests their employees to be sure that they are not using any drugs more dangerous than the one they make."
