Welcome to Ghawazee Bellydance
It's not difficult to see how the Ghawazee's became associated with Belly Dancing, particularly in Western eyes. They are often given the credit for being the creators of what we have come to think of as Belly Dancing.
The Ghawazee of Egypt were somewhat similar to the Gypsy (Gipsey) Romany of Europe. They were a nomadic people and were famous for their dancing.
Quite unlike the Gypsies, their society was actually quite empowering for women in some ways. The women were quite financially successful as dancers and were considered a well established part of the middle class until the early 1800's.
Around they time they became more like the Gypsies in the sense they were no longer a welcome part of the "establishment".
